The word "philosophy" derives from from Greek word "philosophia", which is a combination of the adjective stem "philo-", meaning love, with the word "sophia", meaning wisdom. The etymological meaning thus becomes "love of wisdom". However, by the time of Plato, the strictly etymological sense of the word had been largely replaced with a meaning more closely resembling the modern definition of "philosophy".
