I pity this old man Merlen. By his name he must be a wise man. He should not be too trusting to people appearing to be poor and needy. We, Filipinos despite our bountiful natural resources, world producer in gold, copper and nickel, technologically updated literate people, people who love peace and unity, cry out loud to the world that we are poor.
I feel ashamed that others do it for monetary considerations.

If I were to ever respond to a situation where a girl in PI had scammed me through an Internet Dating Service, then this is what I would do:

I would report her to the US Immigration Dept in order to prevent her from ever coming to the USA. Most of these girls are actually trying to come here, and if you don't report it to the US authorities then she just might...and then become a US citizen. I don't think that's a good scenario.

I would also report the Web Dating Company that was used to the US authorities as well. They could pressure the Philippines to address the issue, and if there are many complaints, potentially block the site from doing business. At a minimum, I would expect the web company to at least drop her from their list of clients.

I lived in the Philippines and I don't think that the alleged crime would be prosecuted there, or here for that matter. The local authorities have little budget and resources, so I don't see this being an international incident that they'd address (no one was physically harmed).

If I was very motivated, I would try contacting the local politicians in her town for help (Representative, Mayor, Barangay Captain). A little Internet search would help find at least the high level names for her province. I'd email and call them repeatedly. I think that he/she would get the police to talk to her. That's likely, if I was aggressive. Also, I might contact the local television channel with hopes that they would take on the story.

Most likely I would expect to only get my money back. The chances of that are about 5%. Plus, it would take me a lot more time & money.

I'd just cut my losses and learn from the experience.

pity man. as i noticed to your story, you have an information with the man, why dont you try to know his contact number, email or address? inform him what you knew and encourage him to go to philippines and surprise her "girlfriend"? ask him to get the complete address of the girl. he can stay here for a week in a hotel, without informing the girlfriend that he's coming over. for him to see the truth about the status of the girl personally. anyway, he can make an excuse of "he wants to surprise the girl" in case they accidentally meet. i think with those money that he's sending, he can afford to come over the philippines if he really interested with the girl.
