Positive freedom is the freedom "to act in a given way" most convincingly postulated by Charles Taylor, Isiah Berlin is the person most often connected with negative freedom and this is freedom from interfernce, or retraints on freedom.
not quite the same thing as the american idea of liberty but probably related.

Hiya, it could be number of things. You may have a religion which you are passionate about and has a moral code that restricts what you do, such as not eating ham or drinking alcohol, but you are free within the religion if it works for you as 'the truth can set you free'. This same religion may not work for your siblings, etc, and could become a negative thing if forced.
I am happily married and feel that this is a positive freedom, as I'm faithful and not interested in any man except my hubby, who is my favourite.

I don't need to go into positive freedom but I could well imagine that negative freedom would be the freedom for Muslims to call for fatwahs on people with impunity, the freedom which Iran and N Korea insist on joining the nuclear club. The freedom which hoodies have to hang around menacingly on street corners and the freedom of kids under ten to commit any crime they wish without being legally responsible. The freedom mothers give their children to run around wrecking things without them ever feeling that they should really compensate the owner of the broken article. I could really go on forever but that's what I consider negative freedom.

This is an American idea and usually referred to as Positive and Negative Liberty.
Negative Liberty is the absense of barriers or obstacles - so a kind of 'passive' liberty. Positive Liberty is taking action and using the fact that you are 'Free' to travel and to accomplish things and of course freedom of speech - as long as you speak! Hope that helps?
