If you are to think about it deeply... The fear of humans to death is simply the biggest factor why we live in this kind of world today... Try to find out why I came up to that presumption...

People fear what they don't understand...

I guess so many things add to the reply to this Q.

Some are afraid of death because they view it as THE END.. They believe in no God & no eternal life.. Frankly.. if that were the case (thank God it is not) death would really be scary..

Others are afraid because Death brings Judgement.. They know they will be judged after death.. but not sure of their salvation...

Others are afraid coz death is a mystery.. They don't know what happens, what is behind the great event.. ppl usually get afraid of what they don't know

Some may be afraid coz death can b associated with pain, sickness, suffering.... Death doesn't usually come easy...

We can keep writing reasons for ever.. However.. I guess the more important reasons we should concentrate on are reasons why NOT to be scared of death!! I have one good reason:

Jesus Loves me.. He would never forsake me.. Death may be scary, but not when I am sure he will always hold my hand even when I am crossing the valley of death!! He gave me salvation & he promised to keep protected as his eye pupil! This reason is enough for me

God bless u (sorry for the long reply)

Most individuals in the world today live their lives more or less in an automated fashion. That is, they have their daily routines already figured out and planned ahead of time, ie. wake up, prepare for the day, go to some type of activity designed to provide food or shelter. Rest, sleep and repeat.
There is great comfort in this routine as it brings with it a sense of stability and and purpose.
Now when something happens to disrupt this routine, then we face the possibility of an unknown, something that we can't control or don't know what the outcome will be.
Therefore, it becomes imperative to not let anything interrupt the smooth functioning of our automated lives, and if it does, then it must be corrected because we will not allow us to carry on as we desire.
Death then, because we inwardly know that we have no control over it, becomes the object of the greatest fear

fear of death is because no one knows whats going to happen even if you are a christian or whatever then you still have no idea of what its going to be like i mean people die every day and they cant come back and tell us what it was like. and another would be you dont know when its going to happen or how and its liek little kids and a surprise you dont know what it is but it just naggs at some of us more than others, like me for instance death does scare me but not as much a any other because i know that i will be with my heavenly father and it will be far greater than anything here on earth. so i guess what i am trying to say is the fear of death is pretty much a mystery just like death itself is a mystery. i have read some of the others answers and keep coming to the answer of fearing the unkown and my question why is it we fear the unkown and the answer is because we just do like i said its like a kid and a surprise to some it kills them to know what it is and others it really dont matter.

You came up with that factor because we revere the young...to the point that even the "young" twenty somethings starve themselves to look like skinny little waifs. We want to feel young and hide our wrinkles and gray hair because with age comes the realization that we are going to die. We do all we can to stop diseases that hurt us.

I know people die young. I had a child in my life die after six months. I had a friend die at 17 on a ski hill, another on a motor cycle, another of disease...all under 40.

Death happens whether we are young and old...and yet we try to stay young, look young, be young (chasing after youthful things).

I remember a movie and a man was dying and his friend said, "The way I see it you are a scout going on before me. Can you let me know what's on the side. Feel free to haunt me." The friend said, "I will not come back, you will freak. But I will blow your hat off an you will know it's all going to be alright."

The problem with humans is that most of us have never had our hats blown off. We do not KNOW of have FAITH that will be alright. None of us know what is on the otherside. Sure there is speculation, and stories of light, but we do not know.

Death, in many ways, is a pool of murkey water and we just can fathom anything beautiful could be beyond that dark skim--and it's not like we get to go back in case we don't like it. It's a permenant change.

People truly do fear the unknown....we read many things on death and I believe it is just another step for everyone, but do I know this to be fact? No...I can only believe what I believe. If anyone has ever read any of Sylvia Browne's books I believe people would look at death differently.

My assumption would be is that people are afraid of the unknown. Not everyone is afraid of death though. It is human nature to want to be in control-death is something they have no control over nor knowledge of what happens after.

In my opinion, people are basically afraid of uncertainties; the unknown.

We do not know what's going to happen, or how we are going to die - peacefully or not.

But to answer your question, the world we live in today is a pretty dangerous place. There's threats of being harmed by biological weapons, like what Agent Orange did to the Vietnamese (I think) and recently, Israel might have exposed mostly innocent Palestinians to a deadly biological warfare.

There's the possibility of getting killed by bomb blasts or having the plane/train/vehicle you're in crashed into a building, thanks to extremists.

There's psychopaths on the loose, and you're constantly exposed to people who may endanger you.

People are scared of disappearing without having reached wholeness or without having attained their ideals. Deep inside they know they are going to leave this earth unfulfilled. That is the reason why they are so scared of death.

People apprehend that after death, they will have to answer for the bad deeds done by them during lifetime & pay for them through torture in hell. Those who have spent their lifetime in good deeds are not afraid of death, they are eager to reunite with their Creator & be rewarded for merit. Ok ?

Because death is to most people where the answer to the purpose of life is held.
