It depends what point of view you take. English is probably spoken by the most people - but mostly it is spoken as a second language. Spanish is probably (geographicly speaking) the most usefull, as almost all of the Americas speak it, with French coming second with a lot of Africa. However Chinese is more widely spoken as a first language than either English or Spanish. However, as the Chinese weren't imperialistic like the British or Spanish the world would probably still speak pretty much the same languages it does now.

ACTUALLY the most commonly spoken language in the world is French! Consider all the French-African Colonies. All the french-polonesian islands. France, the french speaking parts of Canada, the bits og Belgium that dont speak Flemmish. Parts of Austria and Switzerland! it extends far beyond the English speaking regions of the world. However this is only true if you consider it as first languages! If you count up allthe people in the world capable of speaking english, then it wins hands down!

And further to this Chinese isnt a language, its either Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka, and a few other lesser spoken ones. So that breaks done China! I know of people who were taught only Mandarin in school and have no idea how to speak Cantonese!

well the most common language in the world is chinese, but english tends to be the chosen language of the world for business and politics, closely followed by spanish french or german. Therefore we could do no different if america weren't discovered, the only difference is that the world would have a more concentrated population in the other continents.

Are you saying that the English language comes from America... That more countries around the world only speak English because of America?

We speak English because of the sun never setting on the kingdom. America is made up of everyone that was being persecuted by Europe and the ran like scared cats. If the English did not colonise the world we would all speak Chinese and Mandarin is the most spoken language and then Spanish....
