I have several oak trees on my property. The roots of these trees send up numerous unsightly sprouts. Is there a way to control this or get rid of the sprouts? I've tried cutting them out, but they quickly grow back. I don't want to use poison, because it will kill the tree.

Some plants (like lilacs) will send up sprouts at the drop of a hat, but with other plants it can mean the plant is in distress. If you're sure that they're sprouting from the roots and not from fallen acorns, I would recommend calling in an arborist (make sure they're certified). If you can't afford one, take a good long look at your trees. You can continue to cut the sprouts off, but your best bet is to figure out why they're growing in the first place. I don't know where you're located, but here in the northeast we had a very wet year - which a lot of oaks don't like. If they have been soggy, try adding some compost to the soil to improve drainage. Do a soil test to see if the tree is lacking in nutrients, and check for mushrooms (which indicate a fungal problem) or other signs of rot.

Our landscaper used Round up and nearly killed many of our Oaks. So cut them off flat with the ground. Its a nuisance but don't use poison. You will be sorry.

pull them up by the roots, you might even call the forestry commission, they may move them for youand replant them where they could use them.
