I bought a '97 eclipse this week and it seems that the engine smells of burning odor. When ever I put the car into Overdrive, the engine becomes very hot. Another problem I notice that when I was driving up hill while still in overdrive mode, it felt that the car moved back and forward simutanesouly, perhaps something wrong with the transmission. I as well noticed that right after this incident, minutes later on flat road (overdrive mode), it took my car close to 5000 RPMS to reach just 20 mph. Do anybody know what is wrong w/ my car? But after turning off Overdrive, my car seems to be ok (not good or great just ok, still problem). With overdrive off, it feels that my car is going to die, feeling the engine may stop. As well just before acceleration, it feels with a little drop in power, cant really explain it, but i still think its the transmission. Please give me your best opinion.

It may be a bad trans, or the sensors going to the trans. But it really sounds like a bad torque converter/ flywheel.
good luck.......

Sounds like transmission to me. OD is slipping. Electronic transmission, clutch material may have already messed up the rest of the sensors.
