well it is called football because it is the evolution of the british game by americans, hence football-->Rugby Football--> American Football. Not very mysterious is it. Might be mysterious why they felt the need to change the rules, but not the name.

An American general created football because he felt rugby was too boring and unregimented.

Why is rugby called rugby, they don't play on or with a rug? There is actually a good reason why they call it football, I just don't want to look it up now

btw....why are all soccer (euro football) players taken off the field on stretchers everytime they fall down, only to return minutes later after discovering it was only a minor bruise?

It's called football because it's called football. Why is Cricket called Cricket? It's not played with the inscet the cricket? There is probably a reason why it's called football, but it's just called football.
