are you talking Mona Lisa as in the painting? If so it has been speculated that she was actually Lisa Gherardini, the wife of wealthy Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo. The Monna Lisa was a real woman and as some have already averred the wife of a wealthy merchant who was named either Giocondo or Gherardini. Why it is considered a masterpiece is beyond me and the husband. She sat for the painting for three years which drove the husband to suspect an affaire and so he forebid her to continue the sittings. As a result it is said the hands are Leonardo's very own having no other models on hand!

That is the $64,000.00 question...Who was Mona Lisa? I heard one theory, I think on the History Channel, that possibly she was a self portrait of Da Vinci.
