Only get a pet is your willing to look after it. It is a big responsibility and I wouldn't get one just yet. Perhaps go to local rescues when you visit, or sponsor a pet at a rescue. You could then visit it whenever you like and help out, perhaps with feeding it. It would only cost a pound or however much you would like to give a month and knowing you are helping a charity with your sponsorship gives kids great enjoyment of 'having' a pet without all the looking after that goes with it. I work for a rescue and we have lots of sponsors who come for cuddles and strokes of 'their' animal. Good luck to you and your brother.

You need to speak to your Mum, and see if she would be willing to look after something like a goldfish. Your brother is too young at 2 to have any kind of animals that need handling, so it may be best to get him a 'virtual' pet, there are lots of toy animals that make all the same noises as a real pet, or a cuddly toy and look at getting a live animal in a few years time.

Don't go with a fish/goldfish. If it's not cared for and the water changed, it'll die and I'm sure he'd be very upset.
Any furry animal he'll probably want to play with/hold. All of them are capable of biting, especially a young child that may have a tendency to play rough. If you're there every weekend, and are willing to change the litter out every week, could try a hamster. Just make sure he understands he is not to play with it unless an adult is there to supervise. And, as stated, check with mum first!!!

A two year child is not capable of looking after an animal of any description!
Unless you are prepared to look after the animal I reckon its not fair to the animal or the child to buy one! If the animal dies the child will feel terrible. The whole point of buying a child a pet is to teach them about how to love and respect animals.
Even goldfish need feeding and their water changed! Think of the poor animal! I think its better to buy a toy cat or dog. Maybe even a vet play set until they are old enough to take responsibility.

At two, get him a stuffed toy, not a real animal. If they have a video record some animal programs for him. Find a cheap bookshop like The Works and buy the kids animal books they have. Make him an animal mobile.
But please don't get him a live animal! He doesn't yet know the difference between 'alive' and not; he can't tell when he is causing pain or distress.

At 2, he is to young to understand the responsibility of taking care of a pet. Your mother will end up taking care of the goldfish. I suppose he could look at it but he can't be allowed to take care of it. He could dump the whole box of fish food in the water. Why don't you wait a little while longer like about 4 to start training him how to take care of the goldfish then graduate up to a puppy (which are more durable than kittens with a small child. They get squashed to easily)

Two years old is way too young to be responsible for a pet. If your mum is not willing to get herself a pet, and take care of it, you might be better off waiting until he is five or six.
If you do decide to get him a pet, I would say that certain fish are probably the easiest to care for. Talk to someone in a reputable pet store in your area and see what they say.

Forget it, and try to pause when typing please.
A pet is not a play thing, and a 2 year old has no concept of living or dead ( suprisingly this has been shown to not really develop until about 6-8 years old )
Are yuo sure you sure you're not buying it for your own satisfaction of giving, rather than a welfare decision for the animal

Hi , i know that you really want to make your little brother happy ,but at such a young age to have a pet ,all the responsibility will fall on your mom , so my advice to you would be ,,, that you can get him a pet toy ,,, like a stuff animal that moves, or talks that he would love, that is what i did with my sis and she just loved it.
good luck
