I don't know exactly what you mean by mushy, but if is what I think, You need to go to auto zone and get the bushings for the shifter rods and let your boyfried change them. Not that big of a job and he should be able to figur it out.

First off, I don't think there are too many "AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS" who would appreciate being referred to as, "GREASE MONKEYS". You are in a position of need for the services of one at the moment, and you even boldy state that, "you don't have the money right now to get it fixed." With that said, it is only TOO BLUNTLY clear what your atitude is of the people who provide the services you presently require. Therefore, who are you to be asking for help? All that aside, as the other post states, it sounds like your shifter cable has worn out the teeth on the adjustment part, where the cable attaches to the shift lever on the transaxle, not that you would understand the terminology or care at the present moment. This problem would require the services of a TECHNICIAN to repair. It's bad enough that TECHNICIANS are GROSSLY underpaid as it is, without the need for people like you to "paint this kind of picture" of them, so next time THINK, before you speak. Hope this helps anyway.

Actually, not that many mechanics are whiny, paranoid morons with bad martyrdom syndromes and wouldn't take offense at Grease Monkey.
Someone checking to see the shifter and linkage are tight and well adjusted isn't too hard. You can probably find a transmission shop that will do a quick check and give you an idea what's wrong. Just don't go to Ammco. They'll tell you your transmission needs replacing if you go in for a dirty ashtray.

They're called 'mechanics'.
Boyfriend? Who said she had a boyfriend?
What year is your car? It may still be under warranty.
Go to a local mechanic shop, or as you would say, a grease monkey farm, and have then take a look. If you go to a chain like Pep Boys they may charge a diagnostic fee.
Work your feminine wiles and find out how much it'll cost to fix.
Then save up....or ask you bf for money to fix it:)
Seriously, good luck.

I agree with rakel-de-freitas... Too many of those "grease monkeys" as you call them have educations that could rival specialists in many fields (mechanical and electrical)
But I also agree, something is loose in the shifter assy. and would have to see if it's a cable, a gate or what in that transmission
