Don't have problems with rats but I used to have problems with mice in my garage until I bought some clever thing that I just plug in and it keeps them away. I have no idea what it's called but it makes some sound the mice are afraid of but the human ear can't hear.

The more probable question here is why are you getting rats in your garden. Rats do tend to be around us everywhere in large cities so eliminating them would be an endless job. What you need to find out is why they are coming to your garden in the first place. Rats will eat anything humans eat and more so if you have any kind of refuse or foodstuffs around your garden you need to tackle this. Make sure you use a wheelie bin or a large bin with a fitted lid to contain your rubbish. Perhaps you have a compost bin which has an ill fitting lid and this is attracting them. If you eliminate the food then you will eliminate them.

Get some really hungry feral cats (Feral cats can be huge animals [at least here in Australia] and can be the size of

BTW I have never had a mice or rat problem, but then we have always had cats. Also if you have multiple cats it works far better because they work in groups and can flush vermits out of their hiding places

The links will show you what a feral cat can do, you wont find many dogs that can beat a cat in a fight (Cats are more agile and suited to fighting, with their retractable claws, speed and small size)
If you have a weak stomach dont look at the 1st link (maybe a few of the links might be bad to look at)

Contact your local council pest control dept: They are usually very thorough and will check if the rats are coming from any nearby properties too.Be very carefull with putting down poisons especially if you have children. The sonic deterrents are good but think twice about the cat issue. Some rats can make a mess of a dog never mind a cat!!.I think the pest controller from your local authority is your best bet !!

get a pest control person. i moved into a house that had rats before i even got there, i came back from work one night to hear their horrid scratching noise and it turned out they had a rat run from the garden, under the bath and through the wall, leading under the kitchen sink and back outside. it really grossed me out because im really clean and hate dirt and mess. the landlord had to pay for it all but the bloke put down some really good stuff that is only available to pest controllers and isnt harmful to humans so if you have kids or pets they will be safe.

First off identify how're they're getting in, and if there's a direct link to a nest. If so, put poison down the hole (usually anout the diameter of a tennis ball) put some wood over it to cover it and weigh it down. If you find the hole is *outside* of your property the council's pest control will do it for free, if it's *inside*, they'll charge. Speak to council anyway, for the most they're cheaper than commercial outfits, just will take longer to arrive.

Call in Environmental Health via your local council. Not something you can tackle without the experts. Putting rat poison down without knowing your stuff endangers other animals such as cats, etc. Please don't do that.
