Lights flicker when the air-conditioning and other large appliances are running. They have called an electrician who said he will not be able to fix it for 2 weeks and that it is perfectly fine to run everything as normal and the lights flicker is no big deal. It is very scary to have your lights constantly flicker when you are trying to do something. I am wondering if this is okay or should I demand they fix it sooner. This is only happening in my apartment.

It means the pull on your electricity is at max. The worst that can happen is a fuse will blow. It's up to you, but if I was a renter, I would as that it be repaired as soon as possilbe. Your landlord has certain obligations to you as a renter. I know it would give me a headache.

Would be you have a defective circuit breaker that is arcing between contacts that is causing the flicker. If on the other hand you have the old type fuses could be one or more of them are not screwed in tight causing a flicker. If you can get into room where elect. panel is go in and see if you can smell an odd odor. If so the problem needs immediate attention, as the fuse or breaker are getting hot enough to cause real problem.

I agree with mboatner's answer. I checked a friend's main service panel when he had that problem. Several of the breakers were arcing at the main panel. The flickering could be arcing somewhere in the system, but it sounds like something in the panel. Yes, it "could be" a fire hazard. It needs to be checked by a qualified electrician, and the sooner the better.

oh, I know this feeling well! I can not make coffee if the AC and computer are on. I can't watch tv or a movie if the bathroom light, computer, and toater-oven is on. If the refrigerator 'kicks-in' at the same instant the AC does, the circuit blows. Landlord doesn't see a problem, but hates it when I gotta call him at midnight when the circuit blows and the electrical room is locked to keep tenants out. I have wondered if I ought to call the utility to look at it, for safety reasons you understand.

thats not necessarily a problem per se.... its more just a sign that you have more of a drain on your electrical system than you should.

the easiest way to fix the problem, would be to have your wiring updated to handle more power. it can get costly depending on how much you do, so its pretty much up to you how much the flickering bothers you.

I would ask that it be repaired before the two weeks. It sounds like you are losing a leg of service (meter base or lugs burning up is usually the cause).
This could be a fire hazard.

just means your electric service isn't big enough nothing to worry about if it will be fixed in two weeks
