The Praying Mantid makes lays about 200 eggs into a distinctive looking egg case....like a styrofoam bread loaf....about 3/4 the size of your thumb. The case can be on plants such as tree branches, fences or I often find them on the house facing south...on door moulding or up on the soffitt. The adults die before winter.

Come spring, mantid nymphs emerge, that is unless the egg case has been parasitized. Egg cases are collected and sold through biological houses such as Carolina Biological supply. You receive an egg case and soon the nymphs emerge and immediately being eating.......alas, often each other.

Hi,
Yep, Like the two posters above me said, they mate, the female usually be-heads the male, eats him up for the taking, then she'll find a good area to deposit one or two egg cases to over winter til spring.
Then she'll die off when a heavy frost happens.
Once you have a few egg cases hatch, usually after the first season of introducing them into your area, they"ll comeback for several years.
I bought some from, www.biocontrol.net , a few years ago, and now there in many other yards besides mine.
Half fun, hope this helps, Dave

I believe they mainly leave their eggs, and die during the cold season. I bought some for my garden and as of the other day, I still saw one snooping around. I really hope they come back next year. They are such good insects

As others said, the egg case overwinters. The adults die. See attachment for a picture of the egg case.
