I know this question opens the door for a lot of stupid jokes and insults from both sides but I'm serious. Liberal and Conservative are labels from the 19th Century that don’t work in the 21st.
For example:
Nation Building and what we're doing in Iraq: is that a liberal or conservative idea?

The national debt: putting more and more of a burden on future generations. Is that a liberal or conservative thing when both parties are guilty?

I can and will ask the same thing about big government. Conservatives used to be against it but now under their watch, the federal government is bigger that it ever was.

Think about it and give me your answer. Please try to restrain yourself from making silly Lib & Con jokes.

"Conservatives" are against big government when that means programs to help people, which they consider to be "socialism." They're famously all about "no taxes, no taxes, no taxes" - especially for the mega-wealthy - because, again, for them, contributing in a communitarian way as citizens is socialism. Basically everything outside of their particular agenda is socialism, communism, etc. But they're not totally against welfare - they'd just rather see government cheese go to their corporate sponsors than to those slattern single mothers.

They have no problem running up the bill when it comes to the military, as we've seen. But their "no taxes" stance prevents them from taking responsibility for their own spending. BushCo, for example, is all about preserving his tax cuts for the super-rich in a time of hugely expensive war, while running up unheard-of deficits. Well, who do you think is going to pay for it? WE ARE, but Bush isn't going to hand us the bill. He's leaving that for his successors. It's the "dine and dash" philosophy. Meanwhile, guess where those checks are going? Maybe it's just a coincidence that the VP has a huge profit stake in Haliburton!

I don't always agree with "liberals" on spending for social programs, but the fact that they're painted as "communists" by conservatives for using tax dollars thusly always makes me laugh, since tax dollars under conservatives go to corporate welfare and war profiteering. I AM all about "personal responsibilty," and I actually would support conservatives on those issues if they walked their talk, but it's all a lot of hot air.

Depends where you ask the question. In Australia, the Liberal Party is a right-wing Conservative party, so there is no difference here. However, technically speaking, "liberal" is a left-wing socialist ideal and "conservative" is a right wing political stand-point. Liberals, by definition, want the freedom to create change. Conservatives wish to uphold the status quo.

A liberal is someone who believes in freedom from social oppression. They are free in their social interactions. A conservative believes that being traditional or otherwise browbeating someone over selective morality is somehow righteous.

Both parties believe in trashing our constitution to reinforce the positions of their respective special interests. Neither party is fiscally responsible for our country, which is why we should all vote third party until all the clowns have been eliminated.

Yes, over time words don't always hold true to their original definitions. I heard a good definition of a conservative is one who adheres to traditional morals and values and a liberal as one who embraces new ideas and new ways of thinking. Unfortunately in modern America, the liberals have become so extreme that they want to take God's name out of everything, accept anything, tolerate everything, etc, etc. Traditional liberalism is far from modern liberalism.
