Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that is required to obtain a true diagnosis of Endometriosis. Without surgery and subsequent pathology results, the diagnosis is considered suspect.

In the hands of a qualified surgeon, it is expected that the disease will be diagnosed visually and suspected histopathologically (confirmed after the biopsies are performed) and more importantly, adequately treated. For information on why certain surgical techniques are far superior than others, see www.centerforendo.com). There is no cure for Endometriosis, but surgery, when properly performed, can keep the symptoms at bay for some time.

Barring any complications, recovery is expected within 7-14 days, depending on the patient. If the surgery is diagnostic-only, where no disease is treated or removed, recovery is far more immediate; however, diagnostic-only laps are at the bottom of the surgical world and have no place in Endometriosis care and treatment. If your surgeon intends only to look around and not treat what he or she finds, cancel your surgery.

See http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/erc for additional information and support as well as a laparoscopy patient manual in the "files" section of the board. Good luck to you.

The surgery itself is nothing. When you come home from the hospital, you are still so doped up that you will just sleep for the rest of the day. The only part of it that was difficult for me was changing the bandages on the large incision under the belly button. Have someone there with you in case you faint! I did!!

It took me a few days to recover. But mainly just from the anesthesia. Of course you will be restricted from heavy lifting and intercourse for a few days.

All in all, it is worth it. It will help elevate the pain and help you with infertility (if you want it to). Good Luck!!

My mother had endometriosis a few years ago. They had to end up doing a partial hysterectomy. The surgery wasn't very long, but her recovery was extensive. It took a couple of weeks before she was out of bed, and several months to feel back to normal. But I don't think that it is usually that complicated.

In my opinion any surgery is "bad" but the procedure is relatively simple. It is called a diagnostic laparoscopy, small incisions are made into the abdomen large enough to insert instruments that enable the doctor to see inside. They check the pelvic organs for endometrial implants. I have known women to recover in a few days, the biggest complaints are the soreness and gas....
Good luck..

If it's not too advanced, then it should be relatively safe to go ahead with the surgery. If it goes well, you'll recover in 3 to 6 months. But the scar will still be there.

It is not bad at all. The Dr. made a small incision inside my belly-button, and the scar is barely noticeable. It was done on an out-patient basis....makes me wish all sugery was this easy.

I imagine this is laparoscopic surgery. It is done in a few minutes under anesthesia and often home that afternoon.
