Is it from one end to the other? Or swim from one end to the other and then back again?

From one end to the other is a lap. There and back is obviously two laps.

There are 50 yard/meter length pools where one lap is double that of a standard 25 yard/meter pool, but "lap" is relative to the pool.

The shortest competitive race is the 50 Free(yards or meters), and in most cases is a two "lap" race, but in a longer pool can be one lap.

An olympic pool is 25 meters so 1 lap would be 50 meters

short course pools are 25 yards for one length of the pool so it would be 50 yards to the other end and back again.
long course pools, which are the ones they use in the olympics, are 50 meters long so two lengths of the pools would be 100 meters.

i agree a lot of people answered this wrong

im on swim team so know a lap is down
2 laps is down and back
and so on

and to clear it up the shortest race is swimming is a 25 free/fly/back/breast stroke in a yard pool

or a 50 meter in the meter pool

in olympic swimming they use meter pools,
and some swim teams swim meter pools

the team in on uses both
yards in winter
and meter in summer

i hope this helps
