1. In modern cars, letting the car warm up is only for the comfort of the driver. If the engine is running, the car is safe to drive.
2. It sounds more like a short in your electrical system. Alternator or battery symptoms would include NO domelight, no alert when the door is open and the keys are in the ignition, or the inability to start the car.

It depends on where you're going. If you'll be driving nice and easy for a few minutes you don't need to worry to much about warming up. If you live next to the 75mph Parkway entrance, like me, a couple of minutes might be a good idea.
The dome light isn't serious. It's not a bad alternator or battery. Depending on the car, a body computer could be controlling it, a bad interior light switch or bad door switch could be doing it.
If it's flaky when you're stopped open the doors one at a time and mess with the little buttons toward the front that make the light come on. And play with the interior light switch.

Engines don't heat up that much when they're not doing work. Give it 30 seconds or so to get the oil circulated, then just drive. Change your oil and filter regularly if you're doing lots of short journeys. If the engine never fully warms, even on long distances, you're cooling system thermostat may be jammed open. If you're in a REALLY cold climate, consider an electric or fuel-powered pre-heating system to warm the engine while it's switched off.

ok well 1 usually when its at around freezing temps like 40 or colder i recommend 3 to 5 min the colder it gets add 1 min for every 3 degrees lost so 37 go 4 to 6 min and so on anything over 40 dont worry about. just get in and go. door switch in door jams is shorting out replace switch simple fix that switch is the only thing that activates ur dome light its a hot switch not a ground switch thats why its goin out
