The cause of snoring is some kind of blockage in the breathing passage. Those blockages can be of many kinds—here are just a few:
Tongue falling into the throat
Allergies
Throat weakness causing the throat to close during sleep
Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in muscles
Fat gathering in, and around, the throat
When the airflow in the breathing passage becomes irregular due to a blockage the soft palate may start flapping. This flapping of the soft palate is what makes the snoring sound

Those that snores passage ways are swollen or full of fluid/saliva. You are not able to breath as easily when sleeping as you are when your awake. The reason is when your awake you have more control. Smokers and those with asthma are ones that have the worse problem with snoring

My son has sleep apnea. That's where he stops breathing in his sleep. The snore comes from his brain trying to wake him up to take a breath. Most people who snore have this, they just don't know it.

i know fully well that my boyfriend snores all night and it drives me mad and keeps me awake!!
The doctor told him it's sometimes due to a person being overweight or if they drink a lot of alcohol and smoke (my fella does both - a lot!)
He had an operation to have his nose drilled and he's having another one to have a small flap of skin at the back of his throat removed. with a bit of luck i'll be able to get a good nights sleep !!

Because of vibration on the soft palate. When you sleep it causes muscles to relax and if you are overweight especially this causes excess vibration - hence LOUD snoring.

they snore because the muscles and vocal chords relax and the breathing moves them around, smoking also makes snoring worse because it damages the vocal chords making people snore louder
