How about a beautiful picture frame? Or maybe a package to have the childs picture taken. A small Bible with the childs name engraved on it or a family Bible that has the family tree in it that they can fill out.

RE:
what kind of gift do you give at a christening?

Asking for money is considered tacky and bad etiquette, whether it be for weddings OR for a christening. It might be a good idea in these days, but that doesn't change the general social acceptance of the practice. Ask for money, and I guarantee you will offend somebody.

What about a pair of customised christening shoes to keep as a momento. See near the bottom photo on the following page.
You can choose any color and it's really easy and a very special gift.

My Godparents gave me a silver baby bracelet for my Baptism and I've always cherished it. (In high school and University I used to bring it with me to Exams for luck... I'd take a moment and look at it if I was having trouble and it never failed me.)

I gave my baby one for her Baptism and I let her wear mine as well. It was really special.

A cross for the bedroom wall is nice too. I like to put one over the bedroom door to protect my comings and goings, (plus having it in my room always made me - and my husband not want to have sex there when I was still living at home in my 20's before we got married...) but my baby got 3 of them and now I don't know which to put up. (I mean I'm religious, but I'm not THAT religous.)

Good luck!

Money or a bond is something I usually give, unless you're one of the godparents, both times I've bought the christening gowns and cross...

My husband and I received a photo album from my sons Godfather and the Godfather had "Someone Loves You" engraved on the front of it. It was a really nice gift.

money, or you can go to Babies r us or on the internet to find different items, If it is a girl you can give her a freshwater pearl set, that's not too expensive, and if it a boy get him a necklace with some church character on a pendant.

Many people give religious jewelry, like a medal, or chain with a cross.
