The doc told me to use saline drops and a bulb syringe. It's *sort of* working. Can any experienced moms or dads give me any other suggestions or tips? I hate to watch her sniffle. She's 6 weeks old, by the way.

Thanks for your answers,
Mandy

She is breastfed and she is not in daycare...however my husband is just getting over broncitis (not quite sure how to spell that). He's been washing his hands and taking all the precautions he can.

Yes saline drops are the best thing for a child under one but I also used a mild vapor rub for baby's. Johnson and Johnson has one just use a drop of it and rub it onto her upper chest right under her chin. It helped or I also use the vapor bath by the same co. Then there is a over the counter med. from little nose's found in most stores. There isn't really much you can use for a 6 mon. old and I am with you 100% when you say you can't stay to see her sniffle you feel so guilty and helpless and it breaks your heart
but colds in baby only last for 7 days unless it turns into an infection usually that is what happens if the cold last longer than 7 day then you can get a antibiotic for her. Good Luck trying those things and I feel for her and you as I'm a mom myself.

Newborn Stuffy Nose

My son had the exact same thing around that age. I could never get any boogers with the bulb. What I did was squirt the drops in the nose and lay him back for like 1 minute, then put a cloth on my shoulder and walk around with him for some time. He seemed to drool out the boogers that had been loosened. Its totally normal, though. And my doc suggested to sleep him in the carrier or with the matress at an angle, that way the stuff could drip down. I think it is just a normal reaction to the newness of stuff in the environment - I think I remember that's what the doc said! My son is 7 months but it seems sooooooo long ago!! I do remember hearing him breathing stuffy when he was sleepy and beng really worried. But it went away. I don't think it lasted more than 1-2 weeks total. Rest assured - it is completely normal. Only start to worry if it interfers with eating.

Keep baby warm and away from other sick people if at all possible. I know this is hard for new parents to understand, but your baby has to get an occasional cold to help build up their immune system. You didn't mention the other two big factors - do you breast feed and is baby in daycare? Bottle fed, day-care kids are going to have a constant sniffle. Even if not, every parent I know who has tried to keep babies environment sterile has older kids now with environmental allergies (not that it still wont happen, but it seems worse with them) As long as there isn't a fever spike, baby will be fine. I know the bulb syringe is nasty and baby will learn to recognize it and fight when you try to use it, but your doctors advice is sound. Just keep a lot of tissue on hand. I have four healthy kids, one with environmental allergies she inherited from dad :)

My little boy is 6 weeks old too and just got over a stuffy nose i used the saline drops and bulb syringe, just think dry air makes the mucus thicker and steam makes it thinner.. if u have a vaporizing unit thing just ask the chemist or Take your baby in a steamed shower for 5-10 minutes helps them breath better..
I took my little man to the doctor and he gave me amoxial (can not spell it but taste like bananas) best thing is too take your baby to the doctor and just over night try the shower thing... i know what it is like it is horrible, but he will get better just takes time too...

most doctors and mothers will tell you the same thing about the bulb syringe and saline drops...its really all you can do since the baby is still an infant...meds dont really work on babies..

what worked for me was buying a humidifier, even the vicks vapo ones, those work alot...i swear by them during the winter months when my son has a stuffy nose every week

My baby is now 4 months old and has been snuffy since birth. I have taken him to my doctor 4 times as well as a paediatrition and they say he is fine. They say some babies just have smaller airways than others and that he will grow out of it. If this is the case with you then it is unlikely that nasal drops will be doing any good and maybe you should give them a miss. Good luck with your new little bundle!

They cannot blow their noses until they are 2 or 3 years old......

Regular aspirators do not work.....
you have to get the baby vac.......available on the website or at the baby/toddler shows (that's where I purchased mine)
they use this in hospitals.......
and safe for all ages

http://babyvac.com (in the U.S.)
http://babyvac.ca (in Canada)

this helps prevent further infection like ear or sinus infections....
clears them right up.....
I love this thing!! It works! and my daughter is so much better....

for now keep your baby upright so it's easier for them to breathe........and try some Vick's.......put a layer of Vaseline then the Vick's to make it less strong.......unless you have Baby Vick's vapo rub......

also bathe them in the Johnson's Vapo Bath......and I believe there is cream for that too......

use a humidifier as well to moisten the air.......like Vick's Vaporizer and SALINEX too.

Hope this helps.

I don't know what the weather is like where you are but my 10 week old son had the same problem. The pedi told me that it was because the weather is so dry right now and that it should clear up when the weather changes. In the meantime, try a humidifier to moisten the air. Hope that helps!
