Too much Spyware. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Not enough memory. With Windows XP, you should have 512MB of RAM (or more). Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com and get more.

Type MSCONFIG from RUN (at the Start menu) Go to the Startup section and uncheck programs that you do not need. But keep your antivirus working.

Good luck

Take the advice others are saying about disabling some of your startup programs. However you may want to seek advice from a more computer literate friend, family member, or maybe computer tech before doing so. Some programs add multiple processes to your startup, and disabling some, but not all processes of one program, will cause that program to become unstable, and you will run into more problems than you have now.

For instance, take Norton Anti Virus for example.
Norton has multiple processes at startup. Lets say there's 4. If you were to disable only 2 of these, when you boot your computer, it will try to boot those disabled processes and will not load the program properly. Your computer will either freeze up or will run very crappy at the least.

You really shouldn't attempt to do this on your own if you're unsure. Heaven forbid you disable a needed Windows process.

These answers are pretty much all good, but I haven't seen one that addresses the most common problem with slow booting - fragmented files. As advanced as hard rives have become in Windows systems, they really suck at file organization.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

The first defrag will take a long time (maybe an hour or even more) but after that, they will get faster. You should defrag your hard drive at least once a week and whenever you install/uninstall a large program.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them.

I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the makers. They gave me the code ATX926 to get a 10% discount at checkout. Try it to see if it works for you.

I don’t know HOW they are so cheap, but they are. Plus, I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me. Those guys blow my mind.

Good luck!

You probably have too many things trying to startup all at once. Try going into Start, then Run, then type msconfig and hit enter, then go to the "Startup" tab and uncheck the unnecessary things and hit Apply, then close it.

You might also want to scan your computer for spyware/malware, get Ad-Aware or spybot or something and do a scan. They're available at www.download.com

McAfee can consume a good style of source in the process boot-up. This concern is further annoyed while you're utilising McAfee suites or ePolicy Orchestrator. There are 2 issues you're able to do - a million. Uninstall & re-deploy mcafee. on an identical time as mcafee is uninstalled boot your laptop and notice how plenty time it takes. it would desire to be another utility ingesting source. Use MSCONFIG or some thing resembling disable/do away with that utility. 2. deploy some commerce like AVG & evaluate behaviour. desire this helps, sluggish initiate united statesmight properly be irksome to declare the least :)

Don't do msconfig without knowing what you're closing. Download spybot search and destroy from download.com . download updates, run a scan, and then delete any items it finds. If you have spyware it'll go into your startup programs and make your computer slower. Most spyware will start and run in the background without you knowing this. Also run ascan with your antivirus software, if you dont' have any, get AVG from free.grisoft.com (yes, it's free).

you can do msconfig from start > run, but make sure you know what your'e stopping from starting up.

i am assuming that ur using Windows XP..
i would like to know if this has been happening always since u started using ur computer..if so then u might have lower RAM..if u increase ur RAM their might be a significant change in the speed

if this started happening recently and if ur system starts and loads faster previously then u might be running out of hard drive space..u can delete unwated stuff from ur hard disk, and defragment it..to do this go to START>All Programes>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>DISK DEFRAGMENTER

or u might be having spyware and adware on ur system or may be virus..use a virus scanning software such as NOD32 or Norton Antivirus and clean if their are any viruses..use a spyware removal too such as Spybot S&E to remove spyware..u can download that for free (free to use)P from http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
u can download ad-aware for free (free to use) from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

if that does not help u might have unnecessary programs loading at start up...u can remove them by doing the following..
go to START>RUN
key in MSCONFIG and press enter
a window with tabs will open...go to "Startup" and untick all the services that does not need to be loaded at start-up..make sure that u dont untick important services such as those used by antivirus tools

maybe you have a lot of thing starting up at the same time as your computer.

try going to:
-run
-type msconfig
-and check off the boxes you don't need

that ought to speed up the process a little bit
