1) they stand because they originally were a prey animal and sleeping standing up means that they can get away quicker if they are going to be attacked by a predator

2) like a horse their internal organs can only take the body pressure for about 30mins before it all starts to fail due to the weight on it

many large animals sleep standing,because their joints lock up when they sleep. this is a very efficent survival fator because ofthe time it takes to get on it,s feet may enable a preditor to kill it. horses and other large herbovirous animals literaly sleep hanging from their own ridgid skeliton
