i was reading the news about the woman in Virginia that killed her unborn baby in the third trimester by shooting herself in the stomach. the judge dismissed all charges against her. my question is, do you think this was self abortion and what sentence if any do you think she should have gotten? i think its sick, but i want your answers, thanks.

Just for the record, I am adamantly opposed to abortion, of any kind, for any reason.
But....I couldn't help but notice that lots of answers advocated overly harsh treatment of the woman (e.g. too bad she didn't shoot herself in the head). Sigh. This is a fundamental argument that the pro-choicers can use against us, folks. If the the unborn baby's life is so precious (and I believe it is) then isn't the woman's life equally precious?

I live in VA and this case was well publicized. Unfortunately some states still allow third-trimester abortions. If those doctors arent being put in jail then I dont see how she could be put in jail. I think all of its just plain wrong! How can someone do that? A few more weeks then give the baby up for adoption to a loving family. Such a tragedy and so many people are waiting to adopt babies.

Dont get me wrong, as I do not agree with abortion, let alone shooting ones self, however we do not know the full set of circumstances behind this scene, how do we know that the woman was not forced to do so, we should not really judge, there are safer ways of aborting, something really serious must have been occuring for the woman to do this to her unborn baby. All we can do is pray for her, she needs help.

We don't lock up people who try to commit suicide, but that's attempted murder too. I think what she did is sick but she's not a criminal. If people can murder others and get off with insanity pleas I can't imagine that a jury would want to try and convict her as more sane than those people.
Anyone that would potentailly kill themselves and effectively kill their baby at the same time is not sane - they are mentally ill and should be helped and rehabilitated, not punished.
I'm sure that living with herself for the rest of her life will be punishment enough.
I didn't hear about this, but PLEASE tell me that the courts ordered her to some psychiatric treatment. She definately should be sentenced to a term in a mental facility!

I think that she should have been tried, found guilty and handed the maximum punishment allowable by law. Oh and she should have been charged with 1st degree murder. She's a sick freak and I'm sorley disapponted that a judge would be so careless. Abortion in later stages should be ILLEGAL and although this isn't an abortion, it pretty much IS a self induced abortion. She killed a person... ABORTION KILLS BABIES. SHE killed her baby!

Punishment? Sterilization comes to mind, but I think she was just fined for filing a false police report. She's not the first and won't be the last to do this. Found an online article 'The killing of baby Skinner' with info about another schizo mom.

Well, She murdered her baby, so she should have gotten a prison term. That is sick, and the Judge is stupid for dismissing the charges.

She didn't want to go through the pain and she couldn't handle herself. She has(or had) too many issues and didn't want to go through pain again.Maybe she was trying to kill herself. People have tried that before, especially people with issues.A boy at my school once yelled out a curse word *the someone curse* and he had to be carried to a hourly detention. Hey, things happen.

A third trimester baby is considered "viable" meaning it should be, as far as I am concerned, murder. She should atleast be put in a psych ward because she obviously has issues.

I DON'T think she should go to jail, life isn't that simple. She may have a mental illness or something similar. she needs help, not jail
