When I moved to the south, I was warned about roaches...and I dont have any, (knock on wood!!)...here is how to get rid of them...
If you have any garbage or trash can outside...make sure its not too close to your house. If you have any old wood laying around outside, get it away from the house also...
Roaches LOVE dog food! If you have it in your house, keep it in an air tight container so they cant get in it...we keep ours in the shed in a trash can with a tight lid...
Many people pour boric acid around the cracks of cupboards...however, boric acid takes a while for them to die.
At Lowes and Home Depot they have an outside spray...Im so sorry, I cant remember the name (its a red and white container with a spray nozzle attached) Ask the salesman there...they will tell you... spray EVERY inch of the ground and bottom of your house with it...
They also have a black can of spray called TAT at walmart...Spray that in your house...all cracks, corners, (even in your cupboards) it will bring them out of the wood work and they die instantly...
Most importantly...never leave dirty dishes in the sink over night or food on the counters or floors...and take out your trash everynight after dinner...
If you are HEAVILY infested with them, you might want to call Orkin or someone and have them spray inside and outside...
Hope some of these idea will help you out :)

If you live in an apartment, notify management. Because even if you use pesticides, you can't get rid of them unless the entire building is done.
Spray all baseboards and cracks at the floor and any window sills, door casings nail holes and openings of any sort. Keep everything super clean. Keep NO food trash in the apartment. Put all foods in jars with tight lids. No open boxes or packages. When I get home from the grocery I put everything in cardboard into jars or tupperware type containers. Go through every kitchen cabinet and wash them so everything is spotless. If you have no crumbs for them, it should discourage them. No cardboard boxes. I think roaches like cardboard.
Be fastidious about spills or crumbs.
NOTIFY THE MANAGEMENT OF THE PROBLEM (Everyone else in your building has it too)

We had this problem in our first high-rise apartment. We went to the landlord and asked to have the whole building sprayed. All the traps and sprays in the world didn't help because our neighbors were not housekeepers. So the roaches were everywhere. If we sprayed - they just moved next door until the spray wore off. Professional exterminators are probably your only hope. If the landlord refuses, contact your local Health Department.

Diatomaceous earth (food grade) is nontoxic that works on most insects. It dehydrates the insect; it has the structure of microscopic glass-like particles that shred their waxy coating and they dehydrate. Dust the cracks and cabinets, inside walls, wherever they travel. You can google how best to apply it. It is very inexpensive and safe. It also has health benefits if you ingest it. Do not inhale, it may irritate your lungs (didn't for me though).
The links are about ants but the info is just the same.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing
cockroaches and most other insects.
You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

Call your landlord. It will be impossible to eliminate them by treating one apartment alone. They need to have the whole complex sprayed.
