How about if they wear diaphanous harem outfits? Would we excuse them covering their faces then?

We live in a liberal democracy which believes in the freedom of the individual. That includes allowing women [Muslim women] to wear the veil if they so wish.
I have no problem with this. It also means that people can dye their hair bright orange or green if they wish and wear strange fashions. None of this offends me.
It is no job of government to say how the people should live or how they should conduct themselves. It is none of their business. Especially it is none of their business when a Jew, such as Jack Straw says something which he knows will upset Muslims.
Apparently we're now no longer to indulge in our ancient activity of binge drinking, wearing the veil, poking our noses, eat hamburgers in the street, laugh loudly in public and be rude and vulgar to one another.
The government should damn well shut up. The people will decide their own lifestyle and culture and everything else, not the bloody government - that evil crew of gangsters who have taken us into an illegal war. Damn them to hell.
This is the Island of Britain - we're all mad! I would not want ever to live anywhere else.

I think I'd be even -more- likely to object. What kind of message is that putting across? "I'm wearing the veil to cover myself up, but exposing everything else" is hypocracy. "I'm wearing the veil because I'm muslim but dressing like a whore because I'm in england" seems to deny any sense of principle. Never mind the fact that it would probably look ridiculous.
People are free to wear what they want, of course, but I would find it difficult to resist the impression that such an ensemble would reflect poorly on the character of the wearer.

What is the need for the entire face to be covered, the 2 little eyes poking out really freak me out!! There is nothing wrong with covering your head but covering the face is totally over the top! It puts up a barrier and thats not fair!
Why do you think bank robbers wear baliclvias, its hardly to look friendly is it??

I think the veil is horrible,
It has become a symbol of anti Western muslim, extremism to cover yourself up in black like that with only your eyes showing.
It is anathema to Western culture. We value being able to communicate face to face with another person, see their expressions etc. It represents honesty and truth. Covering the face is disrespectful to the person you are speaking to and represents duplicity, deciet etc. Theives, robbers and terrorists cover their faces.
These people have to decide where they want to live. They can't have their cake and eat it. If they want to live in the UK they have to respect our customs and attempt to integrate. If they don't then they should go and live in an Islamic state where they can dress how they like. Obviously they won't get all the benefits of living here (free healthcare, social housing etc) but that depends if their beleiefs matter most to them.
I'm really annoyed that this scrounging ***** is going to cost the UK taxpayer £250,000 to take her case to the European Court. I'm sure her Mullahs could raise that money for her. Why the hell should we pay for it? They seemto able to raise enouh to buy £250,000 houses (whilst claiming dole and legal aid) and fund terrorism (in the case of Hook Hamza).
I wouldn't want her teaching my kid.

Looks like we catholic's forgot not long back in church we all had to wear it to mass,so what?
1.we in the west cannot change the law's of a whole cast ok,it's like someone coming to england and telling the lot of you to not to wear you long winter coats you could be having a shot gun under it and its freezing cold out there.
i will say that a lady's are allowed to wear what they want so long as they are comfortable and they are not distracting men driver's on the road,cause women dress to kill i say because i do dress to kill and i mean it,one look at me is not enough you will want to keep looking till im out of sight and not out of mind,i have foun d creaps do a turn around just to say hello and you look too good to be true,look don't touch unless you want to get hit below the belt.

this is a free country i cannot understand why they want to cover up there faces belief or not people have fought for many years for equal rights to me as in a lot of faiths some beliefs are way out of date

Actually your question isn't so stupid, because my girlfriend who wears a veil always wears really stylish brightly coloured ones and I think it looks more acceptable to others, me I think she can wear a sack if she wants to, she's still a nice gal.

i think its gone a bit over board this thing now about wearing veils. i cant see anything wrong in wearing them. maybe they should make designated areas where veils arent allowed. i dont know. it really does my head in!
