What could cause this? Is there any way of getting them back? Does it mean I have a virus or anything?

I opened up Yahoo Mail again and they are back! Thank God it didn't only happen to me. It must be a Yahoo fault. Thanks to everyone who answered.

If you're using Outlook or Outlook express it is a file that ends in .pab. So do a search for *.pab to find the location of the file. Then what you can do is readd the personal address book, usually through File > Import/Export > Then choose Import .pab file and browse to the location of the personal address book (pab)
