Am due to be passing through Tangiers, a city which i do actually like (am i in a minority?) in December. Would prefer to stay in the ville nouvelle this time rather than the medina. Where did you stay when you were there and would you recommend it? Low budget but not too dodgy.

Hello Beautiful Sadness,

Your Yahoo! name is so poetic. I will endeavour to answer you question. Had it been Marrakesh I would have been better informed to answer you but I have been to tangier four or five times, so I can contribute. By the way you count me in with your minority: I like Tangiers in December -in low season to be accurate- less busy quiet and nice.

To answer your question I must say that it all depends on how cheap you wanna go. I always use the 4-star Oumnia (Puerto) in Tangiers and I get a double room with great breakfast for around the equivalent $100, this hotel is Spanish run and is top notch (best value for money). A little way along the beach is Hotel Tariq which is the lower end of 3 stars but is acceptable and goes for around $50. Ibis does the same price but the room is better (yet more confined) and is not near the beach. If you change your mind and want to revert to the medina this time, one particularly cheap yet good option is available in Hotel Ma'moura which is in the casaba -old town-, reasonably clean and with an en-suite bathroom for around 200 Dirhams $25, and the people there are super friendly and nice. While it is strictly your prerogative, I don't think it is healthy to go below that.

I think a good clear guide book is a very good investment (I find the one by DK Eyewitness Travel Guides series name "Morocco" to be outstanding) available in all bookshops in the UK like borders WH Smith etc. or from amazon.com. This book is indispensable and do try and browse through it at least one week before going to the place. It will help you -amongst other things- decide which hotels to stay at in Morocco.

Good luck with your trip.

It depends upon in which you wish to reside- close the desolate tract, close the sea, in a town, within the nation-state... I in my view do not like Casa, however I love Sale and Rabat, and the nation-state close there. I additionally just like the north of Morocco, towards Spain. I have not traveled to the south but, so I are not able to relatively provide an opinion on that. I might prevent such a lot touristy places, readily to preserve the price of residing down.
