My 9 month old had reflux too, I don't know why your pediatrician told you Mylanta, but do not give your son that, go see another Pediatrician and ask them to prescribe your son Prevacid, they make it for infants and it works wonders, also ask your Pediatrician about putting your son on Nutrimagen (made by Enfamil) that also worked wonders for us, good luck!! Oh and the good news is, they do grow out of it, usually by about 5 months.

The doctor should consider a stronger prescription medication such as Zantac or Axid. Colic is a general doctor term for when they dont know why they are crying. Colic is often diagnosed instead of Reflux. My vote is that the reflux is not getting enough treatment and still hurts alot. My third child used Zantac with great results and I was able to wean her off of it after a few months. I also wanted to say that some children do not throw up at all with reflux. It is called silent reflux. It comes up the esophagus but goes back down. Still just as painful.

Your baby boy might have GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease). What you are describing sounds like what we went through with our youngest son.
Our youngest has severe reflux, lots of "spit-up", and he would get a hard stomach after EVERY feed. He would just cry and cry and cry. It was like he had colic. There were times that he would be crying as he ate because he started to get uncomfortable.
There are several different medications that you can ask your doctor about...these are the medications that my son was put on and we got truly amazing results. After we started the medication, it was like we had a new baby.
The doctor put our son on Reglan (makes the valve between the esophagus and stomach close more tightly, which helps prevent stomach juices from getting into the esophagus) and Nexium (reduces the amount of acid in the stomach; These medications often help when acid reducers have failed to control symptoms of GERD. They are also used to treat severe GERD symptoms or inflammation of the esophagus).
At first the doctor and I thought that we had a baby with reflux and colic.......after the medicine, we realized that we had a baby that was truly in pain.
I hope this helps you out!!! Good luck!

Also, putting your son on a formula like Enfamil AR will help as well. If you can't find a formula like that, then you might have to add a little rice cereal to warmed formula. (The rice mixes easier in warm liquids.) You might have to get a special bottle with a staged nipple, but it does help. I would recommend Playtex Airvent bottles. If you do add the rice cereal to the formula, you will have to use the stage 2 nipple because of the thickness.

My son, 12 years old now, had reflux when new born.

I understand exactly what you are going through.

This is what I experienced and I did get some results. The reflux problem gradually disappeared after my son passed 12 months old.

My wife and I took turns on feeding the baby, and fed him more frequently, but in smaller volume. I think he was happy with both breast milk and bottle milk.

Smaller volume, put less stress on his reflux problem, and he had fewer throw ups. More frequent feeding made sure he got adequate nutrition.

Also, after every feeding, we held the baby upright for at least half an hour to 1 hour. A baby pouch with framing came quite handy. It enabled us to have free hands and walk around, doing other tasks.

it is awlful that your doc gave your baby mylanta, its not strong enough for a reflux baby. My son has severe reflux, we went through zantac axid and finally prevacid to get it under control, they also can change the babies formula, there is a prescription formula called ellecare that is perfect for the colic associated with reflux, especially if it is associated with any allergies (my son has allergies to milk and soy also) we have been in the hospital 15 times, and prob todday will make 16 (im waiting for the call from the doc).

my advice is prevacid, rice cereal, dr browns bottles, ellecare, and a good gastrointerologist for your son, there is no pediatrican out there that needs or is qualify to handle a reflux baby, this is your sons health.

also to let you know if the reflux isn't properly managed that your son can aspirate the reflux into his lungs causing numerous types of pnemonia and respiratory infections

It is normal for all babies to spit up anywhere from a little to alot. It isn't reflux. I suffer from reflux disease and I have never seen a baby that had it. Do you lay the baby down on his stomach? If so don't. Hold him for awhile after he eats so the formula or milk can go down properly. He needs to be held so that gas won't build up in his tiny stomach. Also get a different doctor.

Colic would affect him at night also.Maybe it is just not dark enough or quiet enough during the day for him to sleep.
And the reflux,I assume he spits up ALOT. My Grand baby has reflux also, she is 5 months old,her pediatrician wrote her a script for Zantac, but it does not help she still spits up bad,so the pediatrician said other than the spitting up being annoying, there was no real problem as long as she does not lose weight.

My daughter had open heart surgery, and she uses a feeding tube to help with the feedings. The tube itself usually gives her reflux, and she is prescribed to Zantac for her acid reflux. Maybe you should switch Pediatricians because you are getting no help with your baby crying all the time. Do what works for you, you know best, you're the mother. Good luck.

my daughter did have reflux. what her doctor told me to do was to thicken all her fluids with oatmeal. your son needs to get a swallow study done. her doctor put her on zantac and reglan. but try thickening everything liquid, and when you lay him down at night or nap make sure he is propped up. that is a must for reflux.
especially if he is not on the right medicine. my daughter was couging at night and i found out the hard way she choked on whatever was coming back up. so be very careful and i wish u the best of luck!

My son had reflux also his pretty severe they gave him prevacid and changed his formula and they told me to put baby cereal in his milk to give it a thicker texture so he can keep it down better.
