Have a person jump out at them. And the that same person will tell them all a story. Have some people renact the story on the side of the line. And then, have them enter.

Hiya.
Three things have worked well for us in the past.
1. A Huge warning sign with many disclaimers and such like : Pregnant Women should not go through, people with heart trouble ect ect.
2. Have someone chase the group out at the end with a working chain saw (chain removed ) Make sure those going in can see the chain saw guy.
3. If at all possible get your local fire department or EMS to have a vehicle there. An Ambulance is awesome if you can get it.
Happy Haunting and GOD bless you.

A few years ago I set up a haunted house in my basement for my sister and her friends. I am totally in to Halloween anyway I had just planned to do the scaring inside but I had a few extra friends that wanted to help so I had one dress as a killer clown and another as a helpless victim and while they were waiting outside I had them run out from the dark and the clown killed the helpless victim in front of them it was so unexpected it scared the crap out of them and they were afraid to go inside. I laugh just thinking about it. It was good harmless fun. Try setting something up while they are waiting cause they won't expect it. good Luck and Happy Haunting!

hire people or some friends to get out of the house scared, or crying, and making comments about the storyline the people told you about. Act scared yourself, and be secretive about what happens inside the house. Be stoic. You can also place mirror in very poorly illuminated places, that's creepy. Of course, in addition to the scary things you already need to have, use the tension factor.

Tell people before they go in, "Now I know that you guys know this is a 'fake' haunted house, but I want you to be very careful. A few years ago..." and then make up some horrible thing about how an escaped convict was hiding out in a haunted house, or one of the actors grabbed a real knife instead of a rubber one, or the exterminator couldn't make it out to the house this year so the insects might be real, or there was an infestation of rats... etc... whatever creeps them out, but make sure it's age appropriate!

Get people that are part of the haunted house to scare the people waiting outside.this would be good if you had a long line because people did this at my school.and make sure they wear something scary because it won't work if they're wearing no costume or something.and get someone to scare them right when they're about to enter so other people can see too!just trying to help, and hopefully it will.

Have someone read or record an urban legend about the house they are about to go into. Have some people you know in the lines, adding to the creepiness, by saying things like, I heard that and adding facts, it will get people thinking and some scarey music and sound effects wouldn't hurt. Have fun, it sounds great.

are you going to use a really old house? is yes, make up a really old scary story, like in amityville horror where they used the house as a torture house. also, add something like, when the old clock inside the house strike 12 midnight, someone or something will haen inside.
hire or ask people to dress up like ghosts or monsters and tell them to walk past the windows where people outside can see, that would realy make their hair stand and can make them very curious!
be sure to make a story that will match to what's inside the house. this way people would really like the haunted house.

Install an electric eye (under grass etc, hide) wired to a speaker or moving dummy. When people break the eye's bean the speaker will go off or the dummy will move or both!! Get one of them security light sensor. Wire it up to the above items. When the sensor see's movement the items will do their thing! This is an easy job!

Well you could dress up as a scarecrow and stand infront of the haunted house, and put a real thin plastic brown bag over your head, and kinda tilt your head, without then notices the movements, and wear a hat and when you drop, they'll place it back over your head, and when they do, reach your arms out to grab them. Or hide in a bush and jump out of it.
