did your friends go to medical school? Do your friends know about the risk factors for cardiac disease and how sick chronic hypertension can make someone later in life? Do your friends know pharmacology, physiology, and biochemistry? I doubt it.
Trust the doctor, don't trust uneducated people saying things that aren't true. You're not going to get 'dependant' on blood pressure medication.

Take the pills. If you have a good doctor you will be scheduled to go back for a check up after 3-4 months. If you are experiencing any side effects from the medicine discuss with you doctor and he can change your prescription. It took me three different types of Blood pressure meds before we found one that works well for me. Blood pressure meds are non-narcotic as far as I know...and if there were "natural" means to lower BP wouldn't we all be doing it?
The first one left me really tired all the time.
The second one made me feel kinda depressed and lethargic.
The third one was great...I felt really good, but my pressure wasn't low enough.
The fourth one is working GREAT. And I am not suffering any apparent side effects!

I think doctors/pharmacists/nurses etc. should be required to disclose their limitations (whether self-imposed or not) when they apply for a job. If there is something on the job description that they are unable or unwilling to do, then they should not get hired. I do think it is hypocritical of them to impose their will on patients and other doctors by hiding a request by the patient from them. As a metaphor consider: if someone is not able to lift something over 50 pounds, they might still be able to other parts required of a job, but they would go find someone to help them lift if it was necessary; they should not going and leave something in undone (unlifted) in the middle of the floor then HIDE the fact that it is not done from other people who could complete the task. BTW, the doctor or whatever is perfectly fine to learn a specialized version of medicine that does not use certain techniques; how else would their cult/religion get medical care unless they had special doctors trained in those techniques. If those doctors were to apply for a job OUTSIDE their specialized group, however, they should accept their limitations. They might have to get a lesser position or take a lower pay scale because they are limited. If they are so intrusive that they cannot allow other people to get their jobs done as well, then the nut-job belongs in their little commune with the other people like them.

One of the best ways is to lose weight. Also don't smoke, no caffiene, little or no salt, learn some relaxing techniques. However you should stay on the pills until these methods work. If all else fails staying on the medication is not all that big a deal because the alternative is a massive heartattack, which is often fatal in men of your age group. Follow your doctor's advice, he does know more than your friends.

The first line of treatment for hypertension is usually dietary and lifestyle change. Your MD may take a more aggresive approach in general, or he may be looking at pre-exiting conditions or a family history of hypertension induced disease.
I would be more concerned with possible side effects impacting my quality of life than I would about long-term dependence. However, in either case, you may wish to seek a second opinion on medication.
In terms of alternative treatment, diet recommendations would be for a low sodium, high fiber vegetarian diet. Supplements could include extra Vitamin C, Co-ezyme Q10 and Garlic.

Why bother going to the doctor at all when your "friends" can diagnose and prescribe for you? Why even come on here asking health questions? Ask your "friends".
If you are that foolish to listen to your "friends" - and I use quotes because anyone who would tell you not to take blood pressure medication that has been prescribed for you is NOT a friend - then you deserve the arterial, kidney, and cardiac damage that will occur to name a few.
Ask your "friends" if they will be pallbearers for you.

some things cannot be treated with out medication you need to talk to your doctor and let him understand you dont want to use meds. he may find an alternitive way to treat your problem. lower your salt and colestoral and it may go down some, but if you have a blockage he may be using the meds to keep you from having to have a by-pass untill it is absolutely needed. dont take info from the web.. only your doc knows exactly what your condition is. hypertension can lead to early death if not treated.

Don't let your friends talk you into a stroke or worse. Follow the advice of the doctor and the person who said to correct your diet and exercise. You are young enough that you just might be able to overcome the situation.

I half agree with your friends. But if I were you, I would start the medication, but exercise and correct your diet to help you bring it down naturally, then stop the meds.
