My and my friend are having a dispute: I was of the belif that having your hair shaved off by the midwife before labour was an idea which was thrown out years ago. I had a baby 13 yrs ago and this did not happen. But my friend had a baby at the same hospital, 11 yrs ago, and they shaved hers! What's the deal here lol?

My children are 5 through to 4 months and the only time I was shaved was when I had my caesarians. Maybe hers was extra bushy and obstructing their view?!!!

Well I think it depends on individuals and also midwives and doctors too but i dont think it really has any medical significance. With my first baby I didnt shave and the midwife didnt say anything about it but with the second one that am carrying now i think i will prefer to shave to look neater before going to the hospital. As for shaving before having a cs I think it's so the area can be clean and clear.

I had a baby 9 months ago (Delivered by a midwife) and was left untouched. I did trim a week or two before (because I was having exams every week like you do at the end of pregnancy) but I wasn't bald either. It may depend on the preference of the person delivering, but if you don't want one, I don't think you have to have one. There's no medical reasoning behind it, so they cannot force you.

i was in the O.R. yesterday with a c-section and they shaved the woman almost completely. i think it is a matter of hair getting in the incision or just basically dr.'s preference about hair being in the way. a long time ago they used to do c-sections up and down, nowaday's they do them across right above the the hair line so that might also be why some dr.'s chose to shave..

This was a common practice years back. They thought that the hair could contain bacteria that would effect the baby. Now a days it is a woman's choice. But if she had group B strep that could be why they shaved it. But most of the time they don't because there is no reason to.

I'm not sure about vaginal births, but I had to be shaved due to c-section, three to be exact. I would imagine that either she requested it or every Dr.-midwife has they're own practices...You get shaved for c-section because the insision is made in the pubic area, this is called the "bikini cut", silly, I know, but true.

I had my daughter 21 years ago and they didn't shave anything. I didn't even shave my legs for a few months before so I was like a gorilla givig birth. I think they stopped shaving in the 50's when they realized they didn't need so much sterility in such a natural process.

There is no medically sound reason to shave. There isn't enough down there to breed bacteria, and if a woman is so bushy that you can't see through it to get to the baby, well, she needs to shave anyway. It really depends on the hospital and the doctor/midwife.

When I was pregnant I shaved until I just could no longer reach without pulling a muscle. And yes I had a bush when I went into labor. And No I did not care and neither will your doctor. They dont expect a neat bush. They will shave you before you deliver. So no worries.

My son was born 7 years ago and they didnt shave me. Maybe your friend just had a really old fashioned midwife that prefered the old ways.
