It's the cave man thing. Men like to hunt and conquer. To some degree, it is a natural instinct in all of them.
Be careful, though. An extreme need for constant and repeated sexual conquest can be part of a sociopathic personality disorder, and is one of the symptoms of the manic phase of bipolar disorder. If you are dealing with THAT kind of hit and run player, run for the hills. You will never change them, and they have the capability to do a lot of damage before you figure that out.

This is not true of all men, you did say men (more then one).

This means they are asking you more then once. You are playing hard to get.
When that happens most men would ask some one else also, if they hit it off, well then you are out of the picture.
This answers why.
Now what to do next time:
You say I would love to call you some time please may I have your phone number, then find a good public place to meet the person on your term like a lunch, or an afternoon tea, this way you have the upper hand, and you control the situation. Another girl friend can join you too.
Try this and see what happens.

Because you are meeting the wrong men. Some men thrive on the hunt. They don't really want to get to know you, they just want to see how far they can get. And once they see that they need to, they lose interest. Sometimes, they are so enslaved by their hormones that they can't keep their attention span on one person anyway. That's because the people you are dealing with are probably very young.

Once a guy likes any girl for.... it might be for anything! Looks, Smartness, Caring, Cheerfullness, Faithfulness.... He tries to impress that girl and once he starts to get a sense of her likings towards him, he feels he has succeeded in his mission! "Mission Accomplished"
After this he starts feeling, " When I can get this kind of girl with this little(relatively) effort, I may get a much more better girl with a little more efforts!!.. :-)"................ Humans are never satisfied!!

I think most men who do this are just stupid, really.
I find that the best 'tactic' to use is to be honest and say what is really on your mind. All this game playing crap really annoys me, and it's unfortunate you have had to go through this experience.
