A good question.

With the two examples
/I have been writing since morning./
and
/He has been sick since Monday./

the spelling of most the words is the same.
Subject in the first is I. The verb, the main verb is write, it is in present perfect progressive (or present perfect continuous go grammar police on both sides of the Atlantic are happy), writing is present participle. because after to be we need present participle, been is past particiople because have calls for past participle.

In the second sentence he is the subject, has been is the complete verb in the present participle and sick is an adjective.
