You should check out Southend Council's website. Don't want to scare you or anything, but I heard one council [not sure which] are not going to have a bonfire. Fireworks without bonfire is just not right. In my opinion, the very best fireworks night is held in the Sussex town of Rye. This is done on the beach and you can get a good view from the road above. Most years they have a massive bonfire, managed by local bonfire societies, and burn an old boat on top. It all sounds a bit Viking, but the locals are actually of Celtic descent.

If you can't get to Rye I can also recommend Lewes, also in Sussex. Lewes have a massive bonfire night. The area abounds with ancient bonfire societies, some, hundreds of years old - even responsible for lighting the beacons when the Spanish Armada was sighted.

The bonfire, an ancient British rite to herald the return of the sun, goes right back to the Celts. In Cornwall, and I believe also in Wales, they have bonfires around Christmas and New Year.

I do hope there will be a big bonfire at Southend for you and your family and friends to enjoy.
