They obviously ask for a reason then have to waste their time reading "who cares" or "stupid question - thumbs down!".

exactly you make a good point doesn't matter though people will still leave stupid comments to perfectly good questions even when you ask them not to

Couldn't agree more!! I'm not particularly interested in the points system. I cannot see anything wrong in trying to provide genuine help by answering a simple question. Some of the questions don't even merit an answer so I dont bother with them ..period!! How do we know why people ask the questions they do ask? Some are a genuine plea for help..some are asking for opinions or inviting discussion.. Human interaction is what makes the world go round and we all need a little help sometimes...I rest my case !!

Do you not think that some people ask questions to Y/A, just to provoke an response...
Generally, I give an honest and informed answer where I can, but have been known to give a one word answer to a particularly daft question...
lets face it, we come onto Y/A as much to be entertained as get serious questions answered... Fair enough, some of the answers beg belief, but surely that is partly why we come back again and again.... It gives us the feeling that we have the higher moral ground....

Too true, i asked the question

If this is called Answers, why do people add irrelevant comments?

last week, the most reasonable answer i got was that people get 2 pts every time they make a comment.

But i also agreed that some of the comments were quite witty and funny.

Plus, some people have too much time on their hands

I totally agree Misskay,,, sadly many others will not.

For some, certainly this is a relatively safe place to visit, often get valid answers to valid questions, but for others it's a form of entertainment, and a way to spend idle time. For a few it may even be a place to boast or show off, and for that smallest group who visit to be disrespectful, vulgar, crude, and insulting, it's a place to boost themsleves perhaps.

The good news is that we can exercise our greatest freedom,,,"Choice" and ignore, dismiss, avoid, and even report.

Your statement makes more sense than some people's answers. However, "I don't know" or "who cares" is not an answer.
Those who reply that way are just annoying. A lot of those who post on here seem helpful. I wish the "others" would take the hint. They are not cute or funny.

It's also irritating when people copy or repeat previous answers. Unless it's something like an opinion poll there is no point in echoing other people's answers.
When I look at a question that has been answered, unless I can contribute something further, I do not answer.

Well I do agree that it is pointless to tell them that their questions are stupid. I think that this was a very great ("question") statement to post. Finally someone takes a stand to those point consumers. They need to get out more.

That will never happen. Some people are more concerned with the 2 points.

Yes I agree with you, I have just read some of the replies to your question, and noticed that a lot of them were just the same, rubbish answers for the sake of gaining points, it makes me so mad, especially if its on an important issue.
