Crane flies hatch out from their larval stage in September. They only live for a few days before dying.
They have a very short life span in this time they have to mate and produce eggs for the next generation which will become Leatherjackets - these look like short fat worms and live in the soil.
You often see flocks of starlings feeding on Leatherjackets in short grass. Never disturb the starlings while they feed - every Leatherjacket eaten is one less pesky crane fly in September.

Crane flies lay their eggs underground. After a dry summer, the rain softens the ground. This makes it easier for them to hatch and get to the surface. They only live to reproduce. They do not eat, they are food for other creatures. They live for about five days.

they live just to terrorise me, like the film birds they all sit by the door waiting for that split second when I go in or out, then they spend the rest of the night tormenting me with their broken long legs, they die quickly because so many people wish them dead and they must pick up the vibes - after that they are all reincarnated into big fat house spiders!
