I am wondering if it is possible to set up a wireless router with cable and if so will I need any special hardware to connect to it. All my provider says on the website is that I will require a Network Interface Card (NIC) for broadband access but there is no mention of wireless setups.

Yes, it is possible.
You need a wireless router without a built-in modem.
You then plug the router into the cable box - just like you would plug in the PC directly.

You may need to plug the computer into the router (either by network cable or by USB) to set the router up (make sure you set up your security), but once set up you can unplug and work wirelessly (provided your computer has wireless capability, or a wireless adaptor).

You can get routers that include a print server, which would allow you to keep your printer connected to the router, and print to it from the wireless-connected computer.

As long as you have a wireless router hooked up to your cable modem, all you need to get a wireless signal is a wireless receiver. This can either be a PCI card (if for desktop) a PCMCIA card (if for Laptop) or USB for either.
One thing to keep in mind is to read up on using WEP, and while even that can be broken into, the more layers of security you have the better off you are. Other things to look into are turning off you SSID, get firewalls, restrict the MAC numbers that can access the wireless connection. On how all that is done, really depends on the brand and model of the wireless router.

Yeah, this should work provided each device has a CAT5 cable connector. If your devices are wireless, you may want to look into getting a wireless router.
