Have a 1995 V6 model of the Mazda 626.

Lately it has been using alot of oil .. around 4 litres per 1000km's and its very black. It took the top off the radiator the other day and there is oil in the water.

Can someone give me an idea of what this problems may be, either being a cracked head or blown gasket.

The car is serviced every 10,000 kms and oil changed at 5,000 kms.

Thanks

The problem could be a few things, your did not mention if the engine had any "oil"leaks nor was any mention of "exhaust" smoke. If the engine had a blown head gasket, driveability problems would be experienced, Worn cyl. valve stem seals (hard) and/or piston rings, maybe even a "clogged" PCV can contribute to excessive oil usage. Please have a ASE certified auto tech. "look" at your cars problem.Good luck!

It's gone. Don't watse a dime trying to fix that engine. The rings are probably gone if the oil turns black that fast, and cracked head or blown gasket are the best things that can be bad. The block could be cracked. It sounds like the engine overheated badly. You'd have to spend more than that car is worth to try to fix it, and you might still have a bad vehicle when you're done.

5W30 or 10W30 is just fine. Synthetic oils, although more expensive, are a great upgrade for most engines. The purer oil stock and premium additive packages maintain higher engine cleanliness. Also the oil doesn't break down or lose viscosity as easily as a regular oil. Plus it has better co-efficients of friction so you can actually gain a couple HP using it.

It was a nice car. Sometimes it is less costly to find a good used engine to replace the one in your car that may have a bad head gasket, cracked cyl head or heads. Many wrecking / salvage Yards have one year warranty.

you have a blown head gasket, remove head, check for cracks, have it pressure tested and leveled. install new gasket, reinstall head.
