I think it is good to go on meds for a bit to stop feeling really depressed but then make sure you go to councilling to understand your depression and to learn to recognize those moments when you are feeling really depressed and be able to look at it objectively. To say am I depressed because I am just depressed or am I depressed about something real. Sometimes you will find it is just the illness and then you can deal with that. If you find that you are depressed about a real thing you have to learn to stop and think, "is there anything I can do about this now?" Is this really that big or a deal?" Things like that. You also have to try to help your body to be happy by getting a lot of sunlight, even buy a light box if you find you are worse in the winter. A lot of depressed people make themselves worse by sitting in the dark all day when sunlight will really help. Exercise is helpful too, I know it is the last thing you feel like doing when you are depressed but it helps so much to literally run it off. Diet is important too. Being healthy just helps. Also visit your health food store and see if there are any herbs that may help. Just don't take st. johns wort if you are on meds.
It is a hard struggle and it seems unending but there are ways to control it. Meds and councilling are the first step but then you have to learn to control it is practical ways.
Good luck.

Depression is such a general term. You will need to figure out what kind of depression you have. The internet has a lot of information about this.
If you think you need to be on medication then you need to go to a psychiatrist.
If you think you need to just talk with someone, then you can see a counselor, or a psychologist.
Psychiatrists can prescribe something for you, psychologists can't.
Exercise helps, daily meditation of some kind might help too.
I don't know if you are religious, but even if you aren't, going to church might help too.

When I feel depressed I go to the hairdresser, or shopping, or I buy a lot of chocolate and some DVDs and spend all day watching movies. That works for me! Good Luck!

talk things through with a friend or counsellor.
Go to the doctors if you need help with calming down, sleep, anxiety etc ie this will be medication
Write down your symptoms and try to start thinking of why you feel like that.
Following on from list of symptons if you can think of any obviousl causes try and eliminate them eg changing medication, not sleeping in a comfortable room, having a burdensome friend etc
And finally exercise. As much as you will feel to sluggish it will release endorphines and increase the level of seratonin in your brain which regulates anxiety and worries etc.
Good luck.

Go see a doctor and take the medicine he gives you. Don't try to get over it on your own.
