Your cervix is supposed to thicken while you are pregnant. This is normal.
It helps to prepare it to hold the weight of the baby and the 'water sac' that literally lays on it inside of you.
A mucus plug will form too on the tip of your cervix. This is exactly what it says it is....a plug.
Go to the library and check out some books on pregnancy if you can't find anything on the web. There are a ton of books out there that will help you.

Maybe the doctor meant the mucus of the cervix is thickening, meaning your body is preparing to carry a child. A mucus plug is what keeps the baby and aminotic fluid inside your uterus.
