I switch the boiler on, sounds like everything comes to life , but then instead of the gas igniting I just hear "tick tick tick tick", and that carries on until I get tired and switch it off again. It doesn't always happen this way though, sometimes it lights and the radiators get warm..

probably a part-blocked pilot or the thermocouple is gone. A cheap repair, done in one call out by a CORGI plumber. Sixty quid should sort it.

You are not getting gas to the burner or igniter if you were it would burn- check the Gas valve, Does this boiler have a pilot or an Electric igniter
If it has a pilot light make sure its lit, if it is lit ,change the Thermocouple, heat sensor for the pilot- if its Electric Igniter, change it- these are easy and inexpensive to do, if you can't do it, ask a friend for help- you can find instructions on the net, its all common to gas heaters.

First thing to do is call back person that did repair, as fault is still present , and you may have paid for a part that is not required, they are responsible as they were the last people to work on boiler. Second make sure that warranty has run out (2 years) if not call out worcester, Rather expensive repair for sensor, unless you live in centre of London , or did you call out an emergency company?. Possible flow sensor or diverter valve but without seeing it can not advise, hope you get it sorted,

The piezo-electric ignitor apparently has an intermittent fault. The ticking noise is it attempting to spark. The ignitor on a gas grill works the same way, only manually.
Best to have a qualified tradesman check and/or replace it.

It might be an airlock. That happened to us once. Also, our boiler stopped working because the ivy growing up our back wall had grown into the vent outside. Check that too. Hope it helps! It's getting cold!

Either the main gas solenoid not operating, or there is an airlock in the system. This should be repaired or serviced by a corgi registered Engineer only

sounds like you may have a blocked jet,has it breen long since it was serviced? try taking the cover off and vacuuming it out. also make sure the ignitor is close enough to the pilot jet, and there is no corrosion around the contact points. But mainly get it serviced by someone competent and qualified!!

is this boiler burner electronic ignition or pilot light?

is there ever 'delayed' ignition when you hear the tick noise?

Gas valve is not working or heater (secondary pilot) is not lighting. The ignitor lights a pilot (heater) that lights the burner. See if pilot lights, if so power pile or thermocouple needs replacement. If there is no secondary pilot, replace gas valve.

Depending on the age of your boiler it could be the thermo couple and would cost £10 to change if you do it yourself
