LAN - Local Area Network A LAN connects network devices over a relatively short distance. A networked office building, school, or home usually contains a single LAN, though sometimes one building will contain a few small LANs (perhaps one per room), and occasionally a LAN will span a group of nearby buildings. WANs tend to use technology like ATM, Frame Relay and X.25 for connectivity over the longer distances.

A LAN or local area network is one that doesn't need a router. All of the IP addresses are in the same "network".
You can think of this like the phone system. If you call a number that has the same area code (network number) it is a local call (local network). When you need to talk to some one with a different area code (different network) you need something to route the traffic (router) and it goes to a bigger (wide area) network.
A WAN just refers to the fact you are talking about multiple LANs that are connected with routers. The Internet is an example of a WAN.

WAN-- Wide Area network.
eg:- covers a wide area, ie the network connectivity is over a wide area eg, between two states or cities.eg.

Lan is older than Wan ! Their father Dan and Mum Nan thought that they were having twins but Dan said to Nan Lan before Wan scuppered the plan!!

Both do a huge amount of spamming, pop-ins/ups/unders/overs, so, you need to see how those are blocked and managed by hardware firewalls, at the ISP level, with the same technology available to you, for free!
