When you care about something, you care about it's components.
When you care for something, you're claiming responsibility for the safety of that thing.
Caring about is personified because you can care about a lot of things like charities, music, movies, family members, whatever you're interested in.
Caring for is what you do with your pets, kids, an antique, etc...

You could well say that you are 'caring about' the aged by calling for an increase in pensions, whilst someone who puts hands on by bringing meals, doing some housework for the aged is in fact 'caring for' them.
