Hi, I am flying into Detroit to meet up with my girlfriend in a couple of weeks. We are hiring a car and spending a week going round michigan to the lakes etc. We're just about to start looking into things to do and see. Any advice or things we just should not miss?

Thanks!

Urban

I never thought I would say this, because I hate living here. But as a fellow traveler I have to be honest on tips. If you plan on driving around Michigan it will be a great trip and yes I have to say Greek town in downtown Detroit is fun, though I have to say for casino Motorcity is the best. Tawas city is beautiful and you can see it on your way along US 23 going to Mackinac city and Mackinac island. No since in driving I 75 all the way and missing the scenery on US 23. Though US 23 will take you out of the way a little. And going to Mackinac Island this time of year can be tricky, so make sure you do not get stuck on the island for the night if you did not plan too. I hope you enjoy your trip and try to not rush through anything to fit more in.

Almost ALL of the other answers are telling you about places that are a LONG way from the city of Detroit. Remember that. Get a map, and you'll see.

There's a few things to see in Detroit, but remember, this isn't Orlando Fl or Las Vegas.

You can tour the Ford Rouge Plant where they build trucks and cars. If you've never seen the inside of an auto plant, that might be interesting. The Henry Ford Museum has the tickets for that. And the HFM is also a nice place to visit. So is the Science Center, with it's IMAX screen, but be prepared for school kids. A trip into Canada, just across the bridge, (try going to the Windsor Casino), offers the BEST city view of Detroit, and it's very safe over there, unlike in Detroit. As of right now, you don't need anything but an American drivers license. But if you're a foreigner, best to bring a passport, just in case. It's a friendly border, they just let you in and don't usually hassle anyone.
The top of the REN CEN building in downtown Detroit has a nice revolving restaurant and a good night time view. So does the Hyatt in Dearborn, which is also attached by tram to a huge shopping center.
There are 3 casinos in Detroit, and all of them are nice places. But many people like to go to the Windsor casino in Canada, as they offer lower stake tables, as well as an exchange rate on your money. BEWARE: in Canada, they don't use $1 bills, they use $1 coins, called "Loonies", because they have a picture of a loon on it. Don't forget your change, as it may well be several dollars, not just nickels and dimes.

It all depends on what you like to do. I wouldn't bother travelling to the other side of the state, for such a short vacation, it's just too far to go. And up NORTH is nice, but again, it is much to far. Just stay around the Detroit area, including the suburbs. By the way, you are MUCH safer if you stay out in the suburbs than inside Detroit. Get a hotel in the suburbs is my advice. There's really not much to see in downtown Detroit. But if you go there, Greektown and also the People Mover tram, are two things to do (as well as the Ren Cen tower - the top of it).
Be aware of where you are at...this city is 90% minority. Don't go where you don't belong.....

I would go to the DIA (the Detroit Art Institute) to Greektown, there is a casino and lots of good food. I would go to Traverse City or up in that direction, there are lots of nice bed and breakfast places and wineries. You could go to Mackinaw Island. That's interesting. No cars allowed so you stay in Mackinaw City and take the ferry to the island and ride bikes and eat fudge or something hah. Its fun though. Frankenmuth is interesting, although a little frightening in its wierdness. Although warning, most of these places are full of tourists and thats the vibe they have. All except Detroit for the most part. But in tourist areas there are lots of things to do, so that's the trade off. I suppose like anywhere else. Ann Arbor is a pretty town, but a little overpriced for what it is.

Just returned from a 4 day vacation in the Leelanau peninsula...absolutely gorgeous! If you love wine, food and nature you'll like this. Fall colors are still popping! It's wine trail season, so you can hit-up many many wineries with great tasting rooms. If you're planning on staying there...lodge in Sutton's Bay (close to the following surrounding areas). Visit Leland (Historic Fishing Town), Northport, Glen Arbor (Lake Michigan/Sleeping Bear Dunes), Traverse City and Old Mission Peninsula.

i would go to greektown in downtown Detroit, lots of awesome greek restaurants, and bars and a casino. Then go to the sleeping bear sand dunes, 400 foot sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan, its really beautiful. Then go to Traverse City, its a nice little city ,visit the wineries in the area. Then go see the Mackinaw Bridge, its pretty cool, its a 5 mile suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinaw. If you go to the UP, check out the Porcupine Mountains, they arent that big, but it offers great views of the surrounding forest.

I'm from SW Michigan, if you are heading approx two hours west of Detroit we have the Lake Michigan lakeshore. Tons of resort towns (South Haven, Saugatuck, Grand Haven or Holland) Absolutely breathtaking and relaxing.

OR if you are not wanting to head that far west, you can head north up to Lake Huron to a couple of towns...Tawas City is really pretty...not much of a resort town; but the lakeshore is fantastic.
Be prepared for really cold weather in Michigan. We had snow last week. Along the lakeshore it is really cold but worth a trip.

We have some fantastic lighthouses and sites to see. Welcome to our state.
I should also mention that there are some nice visitor attractions in the city, the traffic is really annoying especially since the baseball team is kicking this season.

I have just come back from spending the summer in Michigan and it was amazing!

Lansing is the capital of Michigan and it really is quite fun.

YOU HAVE GOT TO WATCH THE DETROIT TIGARS!!!!!!!!!!!

I stayed near Grand Rapids and there's a tiny little shop there called the little Bohemian. Its really cute.

Holland beach is lovely, but I spose the weather not that nice now. :(

Michigan Adventure!!!!

Grand Haven is always good. Try and watch the colourful fountains!

If your there for a while try and go to Cedar point (The worlds biggest roller coaster!) but its quite far away!
