I dont see what they could be very grateful for. A friend of my husband had his father shot in the head and mother die in the same week. Too much violence.

An excellent question I think. I do not have a yes or no answer unfortunately.
The Iraqis are not unified with how they feel with the Americans coming in. What they do know is that violence has increased considerably and the Americans dropping everything now will lead to civil war.
I'm a little unopiniated because I don't really know all the details, who does??? Frankly I believed Powell when he stood up years ago and said Iraq was building WMDs.
Regardless, a look from an Iraqi's view is the best way for you to resolve this question. Blogs are an excellent resource. My favorite blog, based in Baghdad, is this:

They would rather have been helped to achieve their own freedom and democracy instead of the U.S forcing their beliefs in what Iraq should be like down their throats.
I'm sure that civilians who have had family members killed by the UN aren't too impressed.
The west is not the only ones who have a right to freedom & the right to live their lives as they choose, The UN need to understand that

Perhaps they liked their country the way it was before. Perhaps they like to get things done themselves.
Personally I'm sickened that you think anyone should appreciate having foreigners barge in and rearrange their country. The western countries honestly had no right to go imposing their will on Iraq that way, to try and force them to comply with our way of life. Its ridiculous, frankly...
But now the damage is done and they're changed... and YOU are going and saying they should be grateful?
Well perhaps next time someone beats you up and leaves you for dead in the street, you should be grateful for the beating... and the scars that may result... as well as the pain.

Are you living on Earth, what have you done for Iraq, except plunder it, kill a lot of civilians, raped their young girls and killed their families, READ NEWPAPERS BOY.
America has done nothing for Iraq. And when Ameriaca, as you rightly put it, PICK UP THEIR MARBLES, the Iraqi people will be at the gates of Ameriaca, invited or not.
Are all Americans without TV, Newspapers, Internet etc, that they dont know what is happening, or are they just keeping eyes and ears closed.

Those people are not for freedom and you have not gone there to teach them freedom and democracy. You wanted to show to the world that you are a big brother. Further, oil availability, made you go and fight a loosing battle their. You have not learnt any lesson from Vietnam war..and you want to teach others..BULLSH*T
You can't stay there, in Iraq, for a long time. You have to leave that country.

Look at what you're saying from another point of view.
Assume, for a moment that you are non-religious.
A group of people with guns show up to your door and tell you that they are there to convert you to religion, whether you asked for it or not, and whether or not you like it.
They come into your home and point guns at you, and make you read the bible until your eyes bleed. Only when you agree with what they are saying, either honestly or just to get them out of your house, will they leave.
Does that sound like something you would be grateful for?
We came to their country, sure, we got rid of a crackpot dictator, and they WERE happy about that. You remember the news videos of them tearing down his pictures from all over, pulling down statues of him... Mission complete. Or was it? They thought we would go and leave them on their own to choose their way of life, but instead, the US occupied and is still occupying their country.
You know, if someone, say communist china, came to the US to change our ways from Democracy to Communism, I would gladly pick up a gun or anything else I could find and stand side by side with my friends to repell them. If I looked down the line, I am sure I would see you there too.
Does this make sense to you?

Yeah, we have really done them a favor. We have allowed them to revert to the religious wars that have plagued them for hundreds of years. We have created a void in leadership and once we leave Iran or Syria will probably invade and take over the country and kill off the opposing Islamic sects.
We did good right?

Yeah, why aren't they more grateful that we invaded their nation, kidnapped their leader, introduced four years (and counting) of complete civil and social chaos, and destroyed their nation?
Ungrateful slobs. Why, we even made a stab at rebuilding some of the infrastructure we wrecked.
The churls. Just because we rape and murder their women and children. How could they not appreciate that?
I think we've done a great job so far. But we should really show how sincere we are in making Iraq a peaceful, productive nation.
Let's introduce a plague, next.

I am sure that they are so grateful that they were invaded by another country, and are being forced to live in a different manner other than how they have been living for centuries. I mean who needs culture and tradition? Wouldn't you be ever so grateful if someone took over your life and made you live it exactly how they want you to?!?!
