Let me add some small comments, hope you find them useful.
1. New Years Eve is one of the busiest tourist periods in Prague. Be ready for high prices and low availability of hotels. A good list of budget hotels may be on http://www.pis.cz/cz/praha/ubytovani/seznam_ubytovacich_zarizeni/acctype=ubytovna (not sure if they speak English everywhere, but try).
2. Have you got a map of downtown? If not, download and print this one: http://historie.smoula.net/praha.html (especially the central square, http://historie.smoula.net/Praha165.jpg ). It is about 50 years old, but the street layout in the center has not changed since then. For online searching, http://mapy.atlas.cz is probably the best.
3. Taxi is a problem (high prices and overcharging, especially of foreigners), but you do not have to take it because public transport is very convenient. Print out a map of daytime city lines ( http://www.ropid.cz/cz/mapy.htm#praha , the central square should be normally enough) and nightly lines (approx. midnight to 5 am, http://www.ropid.cz/cz/mapy/noc1.gif ). On New Year's Eve, there are always more buses than usual. If the links do not work, you will find all maps on http://www.ropid.cz/cz/mapy.htm . Tickets cost 80 CZK for 24 hours, 220 CZK for 3 days or 280 CZK for 7 days. Beware of "airport taxis" which are much more expensive than normal ones; a public bus (119 or 100, ticket prices above) is the option for a cost-conscious traveler.
4. If you want to do some sightseeing, download and print out a good article from Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague , plus linked pages) - it will tell you almost all you need to know about the history and most important monuments at that place.
Hope this helps you save some money from the Czech tourist industry - and enjoy your trip!! Prague is marvellous!

We have been in groups several times and stayed in the hotel Ibis in Krisikova, which is 3 tube stops from the centre or a nice 15 minute walk. Taxi's are cheap and OK but they do all think that they have just graduated from the Schumacher school of motoring so nerves of steel are required. In the centre there are a few bars including an English 'St Georges Bar', nice place, great breakfasts but bloody expensive for drinks. In the many tiny lanes of of the square there are some great bars so some hunting around is required but that's a fun part. DON'T upset the police, they have no time for large groups. Watch your wallets and purses ( common sense ). Lads, don't be seduced by an attractive girl who 'just wants you to come round to this bar', you will be mugged, so keep in 2-3s. Generally there is no trouble (see police above) and everyone has a good time and the natives are friendly. The nightclub by the Charles bridge is 5 stories high and is full of lots of 'interesting' people and just across the road is a small road which has a bar 200yds up on the left which is fantastic. It has a large nightclub on one side and ( for the boys ) pole dancing on the other .drinks are quite cheap and is well worth a look. Food. McDonald's are everywhere and general restaurants are fantastic. The top restaurant we found cost us £25 for 5 courses and 2 bottles of average wine each. One other thing, wrap up warm as last Xmas it was -14 and snow everywhere. Bloody Marvellous

You should stay in the centre,in the old town better.Everything is cheap there, even taxi, but you should better choose radiotaxi "AAA",because all the other(especially if they understood that you are a tourist) are going to steal you!If you don't find taxis of that company, you should ask the driver how much it costs before you get into the taxi.I have been there last March and I know.Take suitable shoes, you are going to walk a lot because there are so many things to see.It is a wonderful city, you will love it.All the rest, you will find it there.
Have a nice time in Prague(and once more,be careful of the taxidrivers)

I continually stay at U Medvidku as quickly as I stay in Prague. basically a 5 minute stroll from the old city (stare mesto) and itself is a splash bit background. It grew to become right into a brewery initially interior the 14 century and is now an extremely much inexpensive penzion with quite some beams to smack your head into upstairs. It additionally has the valid beer hall of the unique Budweiser linked to it that's additionally an magnificent eating place. advised by way of Rick Steves and he wasn't kidding a great spot to stay in case you're fortunate adequate to get a room there.
