And yet it's still played regularly on the radio and considered a classic!!
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl,
You're much too young, girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth, Oh,
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it is wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes, Oh,
So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far, Oh,
Young girl

Hmmm. Discuss.

Come On now, I don't read that into the song. I just have always looked at it as a very beautiful love song and one of my most favorite from the 60's. I have all Gary Puckett's hits. Such great songs. I think it's about a young man who fell in love with a teen who passed herself off as a woman of age and when he finds this out ,he's hurt, but thinking of her, tries to get her to go away, before they could both be in trouble for their ill fated love. It's just a sad and tragic love anthem, not pedophilia!

There's also been a tradition in pop/rock to write songs about young girls in this context, "Only Sixteen" by Sam Cooke and "Good Golly Miss Molly" spring to mind but there a numerous others. I consider this to be a decent enough song as at least when he discovers the deception he doesn't want to know.

The girl on TOTP looked younger than the girl in the song when the show made it's own video's, it was repeated on TOTP2, I first heard it when reissued in 1974, they just seemed to be more innocent times, be thankful it was not recorded by Gary Glitter.

That song is from a more innocent era. She might have been sixteen which would have been considered young in those days. If Gary Glitter had released it he wouldn't have been telling her to run away

Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. Awesome!
Only dodgy if Gary Glitter does a cover version!
Still, they say "Grass on the pitch? Game on!"

They are more along the lines of lamenting that she tricked him into feeling for her, and him wanting her to run away and be safe because he has such feelings for her he does not trust himself.
Personally, I love this song. It says a lot for the standup guys in the world.

I'm sure the girl concerned is over 16. I've never felt comfortable about this song. Perhaps that's why it's still being played 40 years later!

When he says Young he means 15 or 16 not Very Young !, she's tricked him into thinking she was older by wearing make up and acting older.

So i think its just YOU !!.
