We are facing an unanticipated challenge in Iraq in the form of milennia old religious differences. There is a real chance of civil war in this country between the different sects. I have supported the war in Iraq, but I have definite questions about whether we prepared properly for this eventuality. It is proper to attempt to bring freedom to people and I don't think the people are rebelling against freedom, but rather who is going to rule. Democracy is not an easy concept for people who have never known it. They do not seem to be willing to accept a concept of majority rule at this time and I do not think we can continue an open ended occupation of the country forever. However, we also cannot just abandon the people of Iraq to civil war. This would be an even bigger catastrophe. I do not have the answers for how this could be resolved. In fact, I am not sure that anyone does at this time. I think that in the end the country may have to be sub-divided. I don't know if this would work either though as the resources of the country are concentrated in certain regions. The sub-divided territories would have to agree on a revenue sharing scheme which I believe would be doomed from the start. Remember that one of the common causes of war is control of resources. Iraq is indeed becoming a quagmire, but alas not one we can just walk away from. The problem for the United States is one of perception. There are terrorists in Iraq apart from the sectarian violence and make no mistake they are fighting us. To leave prematurely sends the wrong message to our enemies. We have done this too many times in the past. The idea is make it too difficult for the Americans and they will quit and go home. This emboldens our enemies and whether people want to believe it or not, makes us less safe as a result. In the short term subdivision may be the best course for this country, but in order for it to work some entity is going to have to remain in the country and play referee between the factions and ensure proper distribution of wealth between the provinces. The UN could do this if they choose, but only if they are willing to actually enforce guidelines that would have to be set. No matter what happens we are in it and I believe we will remain in it for years to come because mark my words, if we pull out prematurely we will have to go back again in the not too distant future.
ashok kumar: The Middle East may be alot of things, but it has never been completely peacful in the whole of human existence. These troubles well predate the discovery of oil.
BB player: That's all well and good accept it overlooks one basic but primary fact. The majority of sectarian violence in Iraq is not directed at coalition forces. It is Iraqi on Iraqi. These people are fighting against each other in a religious war. They may not like Americans, but hate each other more.

Is this Democracy??
The war in Iraq was never for "democracy". More Iraqis are dying everyday now than before the war. There's hardly a day passing by when averaging 60-70 iraqis are killed, this was not normal before the war. It's practically a genocide
Where are the weapons of Mass destruction?
Why isn't there a developing Iraqi govt when Saddam isn't in power anymore ?
Why won't the american army leave Iraq?
What about Abuguraib and Guantanamo Bay and the secret CIA prisons around Europe?People shipped and held for years with no charges.
There are ABSOLUTELY NO democracy or is it that democracy is a right for some and not for others? and this is just a fraction of violations in Iraq. The only pictures that some media are able to expose. The rest you'll have to know it from the REAL people involved in this war and not when you're seated on your laptops half-way across the world because this doesn't entitle you to judge matters correctly.
Don't just say that the Iraqis are killing eachother or it is a civil war that the occupation has nothing to do with. This isn't a brave justification.Soldiers are getting killed but why does only few care about civilians. The number of civilians killed without exaggeration would have formed an army.It isn't democracy to value the lives of some over the others especially soldiers over civilians.
I know there are many americans opposing this war and sending their children for oil,but alot others would just try to be in a state of denial over the truth and convince themselves that they're doing the iraqis and the world a favour.NO BODY has the right to judge who's morals is more superior or to be forcibly inforced on other nations.NO human has been granted this right.
The war was and is just for oil reserves and taking control over the area. However, western media and govt will only tell their people what they want them to hear, and if any body opposes the occupation in Iraq-they will directly be classified as terrorists.I'm not iraqi myself but lives of many around me have literally changed after the war- and definitely not to the better.

What is going right in Iraq would be a very short answer. What is going wrong would take a very long time to describe. For some reason (probably because Iraqis are weird), they don't like being invaded, bombed, lied to, dictated to and disrespected by a bunch of fascist bullies in the name of freedom and democracy. Go figure.

Whose invitation card do people who are in Iraq have, are they just gate crashers.
The whole of Middle East was peaceful, but some dummy wanted what was beneath it and so some people have to be sacrificed for that, it does not matter to the dummy, its called Collateral damage.
Many will still be sacrificed though the gains will be nil after that.

It is war, it not a debate game, or a reality show, nothing is going
wrong, forces fight, people die along with the combatants. In the
end one will win and one will lose, or run off only to come back,
to fight another day. The people in the US who think this is a timed event, with rules and officials, and penalty boxes, and exit strategies. Only show how ignorant they are and should keep,
their naive opinions, from seeing the light of day.

the shi'ites and the sunnis are fighting a civil war at the moment. It's something the US can't control. But American troops are still fighting insurgents coming in from other countries. That adds to the problems. Basically I think the best thing to do is tell them to grow up or we'll kick all their asses.

Everything..went wrong for Americans>>Americans had no business to interfere with the internal affairs of any other country. Nor the Iraqis had requested them to come and fight Saddam.
Those people don't want any outside rulers. They resist them and for that, they are ready to lay their lives.

Civil war between the Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis started after the US invasion. Thus, instead of making peace, war between the Iraqis is no longer stoppable.

answer from hubby who just returned from Iraq- the president wants to start a war because of supposed weapons of mass distruction which are not there or known to be there, and his problem is he wants to control what every body does and the problem with the war in iraq is that the iraqi people want to live the way they want to even though they are incestious we can not tell them what to do. so therefor the president wants to make their country like ours which is not possible he needs to let them live their lives they want to live it.
