I would love to know exactly who owns the NHS. Is it the goverment, or is it the individual trusts. Any help would be a massive help. Any ideas of where I can find teh structure would also be much appreciated.

The NHS is supposed to function as a self financing organization. It is "owned" (if you must use the term) by the government, and is controlled by the DHHS under the Minister for Health. It is supposed to be entirely financed by mandatory payroll deductions, but is still annually subsidized by the taxpayers to make up for shortfalls in revenue. In short, it is a department of the government.

Nobody does any more. All Government set up Quangos are independent bodies who are out of control because there is nobody to whom they are responsible. They used to be run by public servants but the last few governments have squashed that service bit and said they must all be commercially run. So they now are, by Directors and Managers who have awarded themselves massive increases in Salary whilst cutting the pay and jobs of those who actually do the work.

We the tax payer though still have to cough up for all the increasing inefficiencies and high top salary bills being foisted on the like of the NHS.

There can be no true ownership of the NHS by individual trusts or any one government since the NHS belongs to the people of Great Britain.

I do!

You do, everyone who is a British citizen owns it, the health department of the government run it on our behalf. That's right, when the Tories started selling all our nationalized industries to private companies it was theft. But who can you report the government to? That's why if those scum ever get back in they will sell the NHS without asking us, and without even paying us our share.

Try government website for more info on the infrastructure (has NHS Direct got a link?)

It's the government. The Trusts are themselves publically owned.

The link below is to a stub article in Wikipedia but you may find it useful

Nobody owns it... It just is...

Like any public body/quango... it simply exists because the government says that it should...

To be owned would mean that it could be bought or sold - which it cannot.

There are no share in it after all.

A pedant might say that "WE ALL OWN IT" - but not even that is true.
